I asked this question in the Kaspersky vs NIS thread but since it has nothing to do with Kaspersky it's probably in the wrong thread.

I got a PC from our IT department (it's just going to be lightly used but online constantly). All it has on it are Windows XP Pro and Symantec AV 10. It updates and scans fine and I've been told it handles both viruses and spyware and it doesn't seem to be slowing down the PC much, if at all.

But I keep hearing how great NIS2009 is and wanted to know how these two Symantec products compare. I haven't had any luck finding direct comparisons.

I am a NIS2009 user and I can tell you that RAM usage has more than halved compared to SAV 10.5. NIS 09 is faster, more thorough and handles both CPU and memory according to its needs. For example, if you don't use the computer, after 10 minutes it runs an idle scan on certain areas. I am very pleased with it.

My XP machine is so happy now ;). I used to boot up with 500 MB and now I boot up with 250-300 :).

yea, NIS2009 and am more than pleased. have used norton since 2001 and it has improved A LOT. NIS2009 is the best av i think rite now if u pay for it. its uses liek 8mb on my computer RAM and has idle scanning and silent mode to do less alerts (not sure, never used it) and it comes with the norton safebar for mozilla or ie7 which can save passwords so that u can click on a link and it autosigns in so u dont need to click the button "sign-in". Norton safeweb also puts a little x,? or 'tick' next to google searches to identify them as harmful and the ones with 'x's next to them dont get opened if u accidentally click on it.

    overall, a great, LIGHT-Resource excellent a/v.

My U6 has Ultimate 64 with NIS2009 and my Desktop has XP Sp3 with NIS2009 ;). You can set them to monitor each other ;). Avira is very good at reporting but not at removing.

Sounds like NIS2009 is worth getting. Thanks for the replies.

Just to clarify something though; performance aside, as far as protection is concerned are they both equally effective since they are both Symantec products?

NIS is a brand new thing. Different engine, etc...of course there are advantages to it. Without these...why bother upgrading? :)

That's good to know. I'm going to pick up a copy today and dump Symantec AV. Cheers. :)

Have fun, give it a good try before you buy it ;). You might not like it :). Oh...and a good person...has Malwarebytes too on their computer. The trial version so it will not interfere with NIS :).

Well I finally downloaded and installed NIS 2009 (trial version) and I really liked it. It's fast and seems to provide some pretty advanced features. I liked the UI but I came across an issue that was a deal breaker and wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

Ever since installing NIS 2009, I now experience intermittent Send/Receive issues in Outlook 2007 (error code 0x80042108).

I just spent the last four days talking to tech support with my ISP and also MSFT. Microsoft helped me rebuild my Outlook profiles and .pst files along with numerous other trouble shooting steps but in the end their tech support was adamant that this error in Outlook 2007 is most likely caused by NIS. To their credit they seem to be right on the money.

Every trouble shooting step failed but as soon as I uninstalled NIS 2009 the problem was gone. I have since re-installed Symantec Anti Virus and everything is fine.

I still haven't figured out what specific feature in NIS 2009 was causing this but I guess I'll never know. I sent Symantec feedback on this specific issue along with correspondence from MSFT in hopes that they address this. I really liked NIS otherwise.

I am using Outlook 2007 and I have 4 IMAPs and 1 POP on my U6 and I am not getting that issue.

Yeah, it's strange. I never tried it on my notebook; this is happening on an old Dell desktop. I'm hoping Symantec will reply back with something, otherwise I'm back to using SAVCE for now.

    UPDATE
I just tried out ESET Smart Security 4 (which has a very similar feature set to NIS2009) and it didn't cause any issues with Outlook 2007. Also I found quite a few users on the Symantec tech support forums with the same issue I have and apparently version 16.5 of NIS2009 (which should be widely available to everyone soon as an update) "may" address this issue. But I think I'm going to stick with ESET as so far it's been really good. Its "tamper protection" actually works too as opposed to the same feature in NIS2009 where in the latter case one can easily stop the NIS service, in contrast the ESET service cannot be stopped. Symantec is aware of this issue though too and is evaluating it for future update.
