Are there any radically new features/approaches in 2012, or is it an incrementally improved version to NIS 2009-2011 (which are great already, from my experience).

Doesn't seem like it. Seems pretty incremental as far as I can tell.

It's not mandatory, and it's easy to disable it from within the interface, I believe. I never enabled the NIS toolbar when I used NIS2009-2011.

People DO love the browser toolbar. I see it in the Chrome forums all the time "UNTIL CHROME SUPPORTS THIS TOOLBAR I AM LEAVING"

    it's terrible

    but lol people

I think the button is pretty cool. I wouldn't use it but I think a lot of people could benefit from that.

Oh my goodness yes. You really have to 100% lock a computer down for some people.

I'm starting to think a smartphone/tablet style operating system would just be better for people if they need this much software penetration to prevent them from manually breaking their computers.

Having a market of approved apps is certainly one way to secure a computer. We can see that OSX mobile's method of checking everything before it goes through is effective. Android should probably adopt this, honestly.

But I think that one of Windows' largest appeals is it's wide open 3rd party software.

Is that something that matters to people who fall for the kinds of things the Norton toolbar protects users from?

EDIT: Also Android is sandboxed by default (and permanently for some Honeycomb devices with locked bootloaders). I remember hearing about some nasty stuff making its way onto the Android Market, so I guess that's a good thing.

    Probably not.

I think the issue with android apps is that they'll have access to your information because they ask for it and people simply grant it. When you download the app it'll say "this has access to x" and people are like "ok cool whatever" and let it run anyway.

I believe for iOS you have to be approved first whereas it's incredibly easy to get your app onto the android market.

but iOS apps are still be granted specific access permissions upon install, right? I imagine they're similar in scope to other devices.

True story: when I want to get an app for my Android device, I often check if it's available for iphone as well, since that makes me more comfortable about it being screened for spying on me. Not sure why Google doesn't implement similar measures, especially now with Amazon getting a foothold in apps.

I think Google will be tightening its grip. It likes to remain open and then they play catch-up removing apps but it's not enough.

When I said most home PC users would benefit from a tablet/phone like OS I was just talking about the sandboxed aspect like in Android (and the others, I imagine, I've never used them). Super tight software distribution control would probably benefit them too.

I'm running latest beta which was released a couple of days ago...and this sucker is flying. Whereas I felt like MSE was quicker at start-up compared to 2011, this guy is as fast if not faster. My laptop is usable right at the gate where before my hdd would keep doing something for a while. I hated the previous betas but this...this is some good stuff. Highly recommended. Looking forward to the final release which is probably a couple of months away...but I've switched to 2012 betas till then.

Not that I can tell. I'm using it on x64 right now and it's smooth as butter.
