I have been getting severe slowdowns with NIS 2009 with Firefox 3.5 and when Norton scans EXE files. When I finish a download with a .exe extension, Firefox locks up. It also locks up Windows Explorer and continually crashes. I have read that ccSvcHst.exe might be the problem. By the way, Norton is at default settings running Vista x64.

I am getting this problem on my ThinkPad and my quad-core desktop.

Anybody else getting the same problems? I thought Norton fixed their problems with the 2009 version. I wonder if I should uninstall it and go back to Nod32 or something.

    Is your Firefox up-to-date, I mean 3.5.1?
NIS 2009 should be very light resources and won't slow down your computer.
Have you tried uninstalling Firefox and check the performance again?

    A most easy method,
pacmandelight: Watashiwa Lelouch vi Britannia, command you to perform as fast as you can.
    Think pad/desktop: Yes, your majesty.

you must have something going one there. i install nortons every day for people i have yet to see any negative effects at all. have you tried to uninstall nortons and reinstall it? if you have and have the same issue try the norton removal tool from the symantec site and then reinstall it. i personally run nis2009 now and we offer a number of av's to our customers..

I am not sure that using Geass on machines will work. :p

I am going to reinstall Norton and Firefox to see if it fixes anything.

I do not have any issues with NIS09, although I do not have Firefox installed. The problem is likely with your configuration. A reinstall could fix your problems.

I have also not had any problems with NIS 2009 working with Firefox as well. I too have read in Symantec forums that they haven't gotten a fix for the ccSvcHst.exe problem. However, you can try asking a Symantec rep on Symantec Livechat here.

I also came across this forum which might provide a possible fix. I haven't had this problem, but the problem on that forum might be similar to the one you're experiencing now.

Some guy contacted Symantec and provided the following solution:

"I just contact the Symantec chat (Please note: very effective), and here is their reply with the steps:
    1. Make a backup copy of the Windows registry: http://service1.symantec.com/ ...
    2. Close all programs
    3. If you have:
Windows XP: In the Windows taskbar, click Start> Run.
Windows Vista: Click Start> All Programs> Accessories> Run.
    4. In the Run dialog box, type the following: regedit
    5. Click OK.
    6. In Registry Editor, in the left pane, select a registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop
    7. In Registry Editor, in the right pane, make a right onto AutoEndTasks click and select Edit.
    8. Change the value of 0 to 1
    9. Click OK.
    10. Close the Registry Editor."

Another guy also said this works:

    Run and run regedit type:

Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ ControlPanel \ Desltop click AutoEndTasks and change the value 0 by 1

Good luck on fixing the problem. I wouldn't abandon NIS just yet as they could most likely help you fix it.

Do use Norton Removal Tools twice. This software are created by Norton itself to destroy/vanish Norton related stuffs in a computer. They create this software because Norton may screwed up the system sometime and need to be completely remove in order to fix the problem. After that, only install Norton again.

Geass may work! LOL! CODE GEASS.

Remember that FF3.5 and NIS 2009 don't play nice, at least the Norton toolbar and such aren't working in FF.

Despite this, I don't see the same problems as you are.

Uninstall one or the other and report back on any changes.

The problem was not Norton but it was a hardware issue. I had failing memory in my notebook and I had bad drivers for an add-on PCI RAID controller on my desktop.

    Everything solved! *knock on wood*
