I started my computer and opened Chrome.

A donwload was shown at the bottom of my browser. It is labled "download". I scanned it with Avast and Malware Bytes, and it came up clean.

When my browser opens, it opens to an empty page.

    What could this download be?

I know the prudent thing is to discard it, but wondering if anyone might know what it is.

It is something associated with Chrome or Windows, I might want it.

It isn't going to be related to Chrome or Windows. Probably just a cancelled download/ some sorta error. Delete it.

It might just be the newest version of Chrome. It does auto update occasionally. I think the newer versions have auto update enabled by default.

Chrome has been updated automatically before, but I didn't have to do anything.

Chrome won't initiate the download for its update through the browser, it has an update service.
