Ok so i need to chose an A/V for my new laptop. with comcast i get a free Mcaffee AV internet security edition. I could also use Avast, which is on my now broken EEE PC or Norton, the one i like the most altho it costs money, and am using on my desktop.

What do you guys think? i specifically looking for norton if i wanna pay, i just like all the features, especially Norton Identity Vault for Firefox (keeps passwords and stuff safe). Not really fond of Kaspersky even if it has high alert ratings/NOD32.

There's no reason to pay for any security programs or use a bloated one such as McAfee, when there's Avast and Avira. To supplements these you can use other free anti-spyware/malware programs such as SAS, MBAM and Spywareblaster

Stay away from McAffee even if free. Get Avira Free instead and don't look back.

You can easily get a triple license of Norton Internet Security 2009 pretty much for free after rebate from retailers such as Fry's Electronics. After instant and upgrade rebate (for upgrade rebate, you just need to prove that you have owned an antivirus before), it's $0.00 + tax.

NIS09 is one of the most lightweight AV + firewall solutions out there. In my tests, it even beat NOD32 on resource usage. Plus, it has great detection rates and scans very fast after the initial scan.

I can sense "someone" will scream with this statement. Hope he doesn't see it.

Well, NIS 2009 is a great 1 of course. McAfee, enough say. Even free AVs such as Avast and Avira is better than it.

are u srs? that the paid versions are worse than the free ones or are you just being patriotic to your free versions...idk about you but i love norton. i need to check in with that free norton IS at frys.com

edit: could you just give me a link to it, i cant find it on fry.com, only at 360 for 10bucks after rebates.

i would not wish mcafee on my enemies...

nis2009 is a great program, kaspersky 2010 is nice also, and as mentioned avira is by far the best of the free ones, if i could get it cheaper than what they charge for the suite id run avira, but imo nis2009 is fantastic

I am running NIS 2009 right now and was running Avira free before that. I have really no complaints about Avira but I like NIS 2009 since it basically stays out of your way, and comes with a firewall, anti spyware and antivirus all in one package, so I don't have to install a 100 programs. The only thing I don't like about NIS2009 is that in order to do a full scan(including all OS files) and to change settings you have to logout and log back in as an admin. You can't just use admin privileges with UAC.

From a security stand point it is always best to be logged in and using the computer with a user that has least access privileges and then only use admin when absolutely necessary.
