Mcafee is a virus itself and makes most peoples eyes bleed and inside's boil!!!!
NIS is pretty good for a paid AV, but there a a few decent free ones with good system performance, MSE is one, avira, avast. -
Actually, you should think about anything that isn't McAfee. Unless they did a complete overhaul of their security suite, you're better off with something else. You'll have a lot of "fun" trying to remove McAfee completely from your system.
If you want something paid, i'd say Kaspersky isn't bad and the latest versions of Nortron have gotten better.
There are free alternatives if you're interested as well.
Avast! + Malwarebytes -
Don't I won't suggest McAfee and would suggest to stick away from them. Friends computers have gotten easily infected by a virus that other computers that used something else have caught it. As tijo says I also suggest Avast + Malwarebytes. Would suggest to buy Malwarebytes as that's a lifetime license so one time pay(Ebay lowest price bid $11.99 or buy $13.99)
What internet provider do you have as I know comcast gives you Norton 360 v5 for free(they might later upgrade it to v6).
From what I have seen Norton has showed change in that they do want to help protect your computer where McAfee hasn't showed change and still is like bloatware. -
McAfee has slimmed down from the bloated monster that it was before. But it still has pretty poor detection rates and isn't as transparent as many other suites.
Norton and ESET are both great paid suites. A free alternative that doesn't have quite as good detection rates (but is definitely good enough) is MSE. -

I would remove it, turn on win 7 firewall and try MicroSoft Security Essentials and Malewarebytes free version for on demand scanning. Thanks to the experts here I made this move and never looked back. Also I recently added Sandboxie - Download Sandboxie small learning curve from me but well worth the effort (Kudos to Baserk) -
I don't like Mcafee too, it comes with my Vaio and when I uninstalled it completely ;d

I wonder... some recent tests indicate that McAfee scores in certain cases higher than Avast or MSE as does AVG.
So... what's the deal?
Were both reworked in a similar fashion like Norton (but still lagging behind) or what?
We could be basing our McAfee claims on previous bad experiences much like we did with Norton.
Granted, real-life experiences differ and in my experience plenty of people had issues with both McAfee and AVG in their new forms - but that doesn't necessarily says a lot. -
I have ESET Antivirus on my system. It's pretty silent unless it updates the virus database or it blocks a potentially harmful software.
-
I would suggest Antivir Avira which is free an one of the best! don't bother to buy one
-
ESET of course is better than Mcafee.
