Ok so i just bought a new Inspiron 17r and dell sent it with 36 months of MaCafee Antie Virus plus

i switched about a year ago from PC Cillin to avast because it ran lighter and seemed to work better

i had originaly asked dell rep to build the system without the software on it they said i can just remove it when get it if i dont want it but they said over the years they have made it softer and lighter so it does not run the system slow or lagg it and it is better then it used to be

does anyone know if this is true
or am i still going to have hard unhappy times with it and will i be better of to just remove it and put the free avast on ?

    thansk

McAfee is one of the worst things you can do to a computer besides running it over with your car. Utter garbage.

    Mcaffe is a virus itself.
There have been many complaints on these forums with people getting infected because they relied on Mcaffe and Mcaffe could not stop the virus for the life of it.

When I got my laptop and saw that the one month trial of Mcaffe was installed, I quickly uninstalled and went to MSE.

I'm not sure how Mcaffe runs but i know that their detection rates are far from good or exceptional.

McAfee makes my eyes bleed, and my insides turn black.

Go with Avast, or even MSE. :)

My neighbor recently took her laptop to an office supply store for their "geeks" to work on and fix the fact that it was no longer connecting to the internet. They held onto the laptop for 5 days and still didn't have it working. They were going to reinstall her OS, but told her she'd have to buy another Win7 license. She called BS and took her laptop back.

She was prepared to shell out $131 for them to fix it. She brought it down to me and offered me what she would have paid them. THIRTY minutes later, I had her connected to the internet, and I felt like a rich man.

What was the problem, you ask? McAfee

She purchased McAfee, but didn't make the connection that her internet stopped working at the same time. There was a default firewall setting that had blocked all networks. This should not have happened upon installing the product. I chatted w/ McAfee and got her money back.

It seems a useless program when there are so many quality AV softwares for free.

    I, personally, like MSE.

Avast is a good anti-virus, its better than MSE in my knowledgeable opinion.

Once you completely remove Mcaffe and run your defrag program and check over in Appdata and in program files, Mcaffe will never run nor will their be any trace of it.

I have Mcafee and though its updates take a while, but I haven't have had any problems with it. People have recommended Ad-Aware to me, but its plus version that I got for free actually screwed up my computer by deleting key system file so my computer would crash five minutes after startup each time. And that was happening right in finals week where I had a paper due for the research project....

As far as viruses, I never got anything running Mcafee or Avast. I would recommend Avira as well but its internet webpage vulnerability detection tool nearly shut down my internet. I have used MSE with Mcafee and Mcafee would catch a virus first, but if I disable Mcafee then MSE was catching the virus as well. You always need to have 2-3 levels of security to fool proof your system.

Indeed... if you want your computer to become less responsive.
    :D
That software isn't really resource friendly, and to be honest, it's WAY of an overkill.

Avast, MSE or Avira will do just fine (all of them are free, fast, as good as any paid AV, and don't slow the system down).

I agree that McAfee is one of the worst possible programs you could have received onto your system.
My recommendation is to remove it asap.

McAfee would make any top of the line computer feel like a turtle or ancient 1990s PC. And what/s worse, you would think great, it has alot of security maybe. BS, it is the most vulnerable aV system I have ever seen.

What's sad is, here in Dubai, 90% of the companies use McAfee in their systems thinking it is the best. and no matter how hard I have tried to tell them that even the free solutions are light years better, they would never listen.

They certainly don't want to throw away the money they have invested in this POS program.

What surprises me is, all laptop vendors also include it as the default AV bundled with a system. Even though it has been known to be crap since years.

    When will they get it?

If you uninstall it, then it's gone. You may want to deactivate its registration/activation first though. You can also go into the program folders and make sure its folders are removed, but that's not really necessary.

    c:\program files\McAfee or c:\program files (x86)\McAfee
    Hidden:
    c:\Program data\McAfee
c:\users\"your user account"\AppData and then look into which of the next three folders it might be in.

Should be an option in "my account", or wherever, either in the program or on the McAfee site.

Did you buy it? If you're in your first 30 days, then get a refund.

Again, unisntalling should be all that is necessary.

You sir, are a horrible advice giver. You can't use MSE with Mcaffe because two anti-viruses slow down your entire system and its been proven that two anti-viruses running at the same time are as good as nothing. There is a reason why when you had them both running one would catch it before the other, its because the other had complications scanning the file at the same time Mcaffe was. 2-3 levels of security, or 2-3 anti-viruses?

    Indeed.
Remove it, and erase any traces of it from the system.
Replace it with MSE, AVAST or Avira.

If it was McAfee or a Strategic Nuclear Strike on my laptop, I'd go for the strike.

Kaspersky is very light and uses very little resources. 2012 version is the best ever :D

    Avast > McAfee

I would consider Panda Cloud as an alternative to Avast.

i agree with most of the people who said mcaffee is a virus itself lmao. =p

at somepoint of using it, it will randomly block all your net connection without even changing anything in your setting, and the only solution you'll find in the forums is to turn it off.

anyhow kaspersky > mcaffee. it doesnt use much memory and doesnt affect your computer performance at all.

A friend of mine had that exact problem for 2 whole weeks. She took it to Office Depot and was going to pay them $130 to fix whatever the problem was that kept her from getting online. They had it for 5 days and were total dorks. She then came to me and offered me the $. I had it figured out in 30 min and was a very happy man. :D
