Hi, I am hoping someone can please help me? last night my laptop was fine, this morning as I turned it on, the finger print login icon was missing from the login screen, so had to login with my password.

After I logged in, I was instantly welcomed with a load of errors, they are:

    igfxtray module has stopped working
windows media player network sharing service config app has stopped working
    igfxhk has stopped
    igfxem has stopped

so I closed all them. I have since realised that anytime I try to open control panel I get an error saying - this application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

so it doesn't seem to be allowing me into the control panel.
when I click ok I then get an error saying windows explorer has stopped working, then I have to restart it.

I instantly thought, I will do a virus scan wth my bitdefender total security, when I load it up it says there are critical issues to fix, when I try to fix them, it says my on access scanning is disabled, when I try to enable or fix this, it says failed and stays disabled, it also wont let me do a general virus scan in the application (great security ey) lol

firefox will not open at all which is what I use 99% of the time, every time I try and load it, nothing at all happens, although I can use internet explorer, which is how I am writing this now, from here I have downloaded and installed malware bytes and Kaspersky virus scanner. malware bytes says there are no issues on my laptop, but Kaspersky says there are issues but when I click fix, nothing at all happens.

another issue is when I open windows update, it shows with a red cross as if its disabled, when I try and search for updates, it just says windows cannot search for updates.

    I am using widows 7.

Can anyone help me please, I really have no idea how this has happened, I have tried everything I can think of, but cannot do much more without help.

    Thanks

    James

Sounds like a virus, or sudden numerous registry errors that could be corruption on your HDD. Can you create a shortcut to command prompt on your desktop (cmd). If you can, I would use that to run windows system restore and restore to a date when everything was fine (programs and my documents should be unaffected).

How do I run that from command prompt? when I try and restore in windows it says its disabled, although I don't think it was before this happened.

" igfxtray module has stopped working

You are most likely having Hybrid Graphics, it's possible that the Intel software became corrupted or, at worst, the GPU is about to die.
Try to reinstall the Intel drivers for GPU and DISABLE from msconfig all igfx... entries after installation for testing purposes.
If you cannot uninstall in Normal mode boot in Safe Mode, F8 while booting, usually.
If it works after reboot open an elevated command prompt and type: sfc /verifyonly
See what it finds and post back.
I do not think that it's a virus issue, but if it turns out to be one, or many, maybe Rootkit or a ZeroAccess dropper, you can deal with this later.

Pick one, and stay with the malware removalist you choose. Do not try anything else on your own, as you may make things worse.

Do not run many scans with different AV's, for now, stick with your main AV and I hope that you are having only one with real-time module enabled.
Check first the Intel issue and run the sfc scan.
    Hope this helps...

did your firefox update to version 30 as theres reports on here it doesnt support finger print login software and caused problems for users. ive not encountered any problems yet as i only use firefox as well.

still does sound like a virus though. have you tried booting into safe mode (normaly hitting F8) on bootup and try and run the virus scan from there.

forgot to ask, what computer have you got and what spec. have you got switchable graphics?

Hi, I didn't know there was an issue with firefox and fingerprint scanners, although i only use my scanner to get into windows at boot.

I did get into safe mode and run various virus scans, malwarebytes showed no issues, kaspersky showed problems but froze everytime i clicked fix and my own scanner, bitdefender total security was completely locked out, i couldn't run a scan and the real time scanning was turned off and wouldn't turn on.

I have since formatted my laptop, although not reinstalled the fingerprint scanner up to now, but it all seems to be working fine now, will be interesting to see if it all messed up again once i reinstall the scanner. I must admit it all sounds a bit more than just an issue between the scanner and firefox though.
