Hello.. on mvps hosts ( Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File ) it says that using this method for blocking could create a slow down when browsing. They recommend to disable the dns client service. Since i´m using a laptop and also work at my home with a home-server & filesharing, this seems to be a bad solution?

so i went for the registry solution:

I did this without "flushing the existing dns cache".
What exactly is this solution doing? if i get it right then it just changes how often the dns cache is getting saved. but this will still cause a slow down after some time?

I just did a check of my dns-cache with ccleaner.. it says its 0kb big and there is nothing to clean (and i didnt flush the dns cache like it says above in the first line).

    thx bb

@edit: also: is there a way to get notified when a site got blocked due to the host file instead of just acting like the site is down? :p
@edit2: i just downloaded hostman.. it optimized my host file so its 300kb instead of 600kb. still big enough for causing slow downs. hmm maybe i should just leave that whole thing as i use adblock already anyway? so i would rather use a spyware-list and add it manually to my host file?
