Just updated Avast about an hour ago and restarted when the "restart computer now" box came up, but on the restart nothing happened. Now my M50 no longer starts because "recovery.dat" cannot be sound. Since the laptop was working perfectly fine, the computer is clean(this is my "work" laptop), and the the hard drive hasn't indicated any signs of failure, I'm going to assume Avast may have had something to do with this.

Anyone else have this problem with the latest Avast update? I haven't updated the program on my dv2 yet for fear of the same thing happening.

    no problems here either.
work computers all froze up after the latest forced windows update last night so im wondering if it could be that.

are you running the free version or pro of avast?

No noises. Seems to be running fine other than the "recovery.dat" file missing and the inability to boot the os. I can still access the hard drive from other computers via an enclosure

    It is the free version

Have you checked this NBR thread?
Read the whole thread before fixing/deleting anything from the command prompt. Might offer you a solution.
Perhaps you ought to backup important work stuff before anything else.

as its the free version the other option is to delete the program from your computer and download it again with a new activation key.

Well ... to my knowledge, Avast 5 had a tendency of freezing up Windows 7.
I have no idea if they managed to fix this issue, but quite a lot of people (incl. my father) experienced this problem.

I replaced it with MSE - 0 issues.

I'm running Avast 5 on two Win7 systems, and have had 0 problems. FWIW, there was a program update 2 days ago.

I couldn't access the BIOS or log in to fix it, but for some reason the laptop decided to bring up system restore by default when I pressed power today

IDK what what caused the failure or decision by the computer to start randomly working again, but it's been factory restored and works now.

    Thanks for the responses
