As some people may know – I tend to be s strong supporter of KIS (Kaspersky Internet Security) – however recently their anti virus has dropped in the av-comparatives report… and 2010 seems to be plagued by problems.
(This is Regarding a fully patched Vista Business SP2 32Bit)

9.0.0.436 had a memory leak that rendered the computer unusable after a few hours of idling… (save for a restart) and stopped video chats and voice calls in ICQ 6.5

9.0.0.532 hasn’t fully fixed the memory issue as far as I am aware…

9.0.0.736 is the first version to officially support Windows 7 – and was only released on the 27th of October – 5 days after Windows 7…
Then it slightly (but noticeably coming from no antivirus installed) slows down your computer…

And it has a “minor” (read significant) problem – it apparently self-destructs if you change anything major on your OS…
Update Wi-Fi drivers… remove Office 2010 Technical Preview and install the Beta…

    Sympton:
The Svchost process that runs Plug&Play as well as the DCOM Launch runs at about 50% load (even shot up to 97% on occasions for me) for about 15 minutes – at least that’s what I managed to time once.
This only occurs after a restart/first boot – going into standby mode does not seem to trigger the issue – neither even if you have to log in again.

    Solution:
    There are two possibilities.
    1. Unistall KIS completely – you can leave Spam data and the license key on the HDD, then reinstall it
    2. Do a repair installation from the “remove programmes” utility in Windows itself.

I have tried both the above solutions and have found both to work – if anybody can actually reach someone around the “higher ups” at Kaspersky Lab - do use this information.

KIS has been a great product… but I feel its “going down”.
I hope this information will be useful to some lost soul who stumbles across it.

    Ok, I didn't mention its 32Bits.

By the way, did you do any major system change while KIS was on?

I saw some system lag since i move to 2010 version. (But it didn't become a big deal untill i use NIS2010. NIS2010 is fast)

KIS needs a full system scan for optimum performance - I also noticed my computer speed up recently?
Is my HDD worriedit get's replaced by a SSD?

Or did someone from Kaspersky lab see this?

KIS need to optimise their scanning method. Problem with the NIS is it looks like a video game setting page & too much annoying popups ( When you activate advance settings)

I had the svchost.exe issue once on the first reboot after installing v9.00.736. Killed that process, it restarted and the problem stopped.

Next reboot, no issue at all. :)

I've done Wifi, LAN, Touchpad, Chipset driver, etc updates and having no problem while using this version.

Had a number of problems with KIS over the last year on various machines...one very prominent problem being XP machines loaded with uphclean (which is used to address a problem with open handles to the registry during shutdown).

KIS and Uphclean did not get along on three different computers I saw earlier this year resulting in very high cpu usage.

I've kind of lost faith in Kaspersky after years of touting their products.

Open handles to the registry... I'm wonder if I wasn't getting that in Vista... I think KIS causes some - but Microsoft just tells "us"to ignore it? Why is it logged then...

I used KIS 7 ad 2009 - and liked both products - but 2010 is plagued by problems - and on a SSD it defeats part of the point of a SSD and just slows it down :(
I moved to Microsoft Security Essentials due to that... (The SSD part)

I start getting serious download issue with KIS(Latest release/Vista x64)

Firefox Downthemall is bloody slow & files get corrupted or stop @ 99%

I put FF to trusted applications list & enable not to scan web traffic to solve the problem temporary.

Well, key issues I have at the moment with KIS:
    - slow log on and boot (about 20s to 10s slower boot logged by Vista!!)
    - slow openign of programmes after a full system scan and full search for security vulnerabilities
    - "self destruction" after any larger system changes

Slow opening of application is become a problem if you change realtime file scan settings. My recommendation is leave it with default setting.

he got an ssd. even ordinary realtime file scanning happens to slow down app booting in case of KIS.

anyways. i just woulnd't use it anymore. there are great simple free solutions. KIS is mainly hype and paranoya and placebo anyways.

What Dave said is pretty much true :)
Yes, a HDD was slower to boot, but if it takes time, 20 seconds more won't kill me, and if a programme needs 10 seconds (for something big and bulky) then OK, 1 or 2 more are no problem.

    But:
If you have a SSD, and click... then wait for a small programme... if KIS updates 2010 considerably, or releases 2011 I may give it another try.

Generally the Russians are good at producing things (at least the final version they finally show and sell - may have blown up 3 times before they got it right - but it varies).

Also: I get my licenses for free from my bank - so I can try without loss :)

Found this thread (and 434430) while researching the dcomlaunch/plugplay services constant %50 cpu usage issue.

I can confirm that this occurs with KAV 9 (2010) as well (on Vista x86 SP2).

Has anyone had any luck finding a workaround for this issue? Are Kaspersky aware of it? Are they working on a fix?

I need to resolve this by Monday. If there's no other solution, I'd have to downgrade. Shall I downgrade to KAV8, or is it just as bad and I better stick with 7?

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    <Angry rant>
Upgraded from KAV 7 to 9 a few days ago. I loved v7 because it seemed like it was a designed with a no-nonsense, minimalistic approach. It's memory footprint was negligible, it's status screens, alerts and reports were detailed and it's features were extremely configurable.
Now it seems that with the 2010 versions, Kaspersky have gone the symantec way, adding silly graphics and animations, dumbing down the settings and report screens and generally taking a top notch, professional anti virus and turning it into ****.

Well, the only fix for 2010 is a reinstall or repair install..
As far as I am aware neither v. 7 nor 8. suffer from this issue.

If you "downgrade" I recommend you use 2009 (aka v. 8.) - I noticed a significant performance increase when I changed from 7 to 2009 - simply because the database in 7 got too large...

2010 has many nice features - and the user interface, it does make sense, but you have to get used to it.
But these little flaws are rather annoying.

I'm happy you found this :) - I hope it was useful.

Not sure how that should help... except that KIS claims to be incompatible with MSN messenger, InternetExplorer and Windows Media Player?

Windows firewall running? Disable it from services (Gave me lots of issues & you don't need it if you have KIS)

Disable Windows Defender (Same reason as above)

Remove the Norton 360 ( USE Norton removel tool to uninstall all the files)

Don't know about the Anti malware program but i recommend you to remove it & clean the registry.

When I did have KIS installed the Windows Firewall was disabled.

Windows Defender - did run it with KIS and it worked on 2009.

Norton has still left some junk on my Vaio :( grr...

MBAM is "on demand only" so that should be no problem :)

And another issue I had with 2010 on my SSD is lag - how does that get fixed?

You still need to disable firewall from services. Clean the Norton crap.

No idea about SSD lag. BTW what's the SSD brand?

Got rid of the Norton residue - thanks :)

Disable the Firewall from Services, why? Doesn't KIS do that itself? (KIS isn't installed at the moment due to the lag)

    The SSD is a 160GB Intel G2...

Log in is slow with KIS 2010 (HDD and SSD; you notice it more with the SSD)
And then programmes lag - you don't notice it on Photoshop, but things like IE which are pretty near instant without KIS.

    Off topic quiz

Does Intel SSD have issues with Superfech? I saw people recommending to disable if you are using SSD.

BTW here some nice guide to optimise Vista and Win7

Thanks for the Firewall link - I'm playing with KIS now, just using what I can without performance loss - so far "pure KIS nothign active" has no effect...

    I'll add the KIS Firewall.

Tweaking - go away !!!! :)D :D) - on Vista and Win7 tweaking does more harm than good, I prefer not to do any of it - but thanks for the suggestion.

I don't think there should be an issue - and its fine without KIS - i.e. fast(er)
