Ok I checked my laptop's security status and it said that both wndows firewall and Mcafee's firewall's are both turned on. Is it bad to have 2 fire walls on? Thanks!

Its better to have just one, since
I have just the Norton on, windows off.. and when I am messing around with norton and hence norton is off, windows comes on..

PS., this thread must be in the Security Forum :)

Windows defender doesn't defender nothing any more. it just sees the threat and lets it go by like a underage person in a club/ lol

but for real defender is not what it use to be so you are ok turning it off.

As long as you have a router, no software firewall would be best.
If you don't have a router, then yeah, just one. More than one can cause problems.

I agree with dondadah88. Windows Defender barely does anything. Just use McAfee.

wait.. windows defender is NOT a firewall. it's a kind of antispyware or what... (sorry i don't use it.)

however, the thing about two firewalls on one system is correct ("never ever"), same goes for antiviruses.

anyway, a proper sw firewall will switch off the windows firewall upon installation and will tell you about it.

I concur with vinumsv that Windows Defender isn't completely useless.
While there are other/better antispyware programs, WDefender can be configured to be a full HIPS, besides it's antispyware functionality, with the advanced Spynet membership (found under options).
There are better firewall and HIPS options than the standard Vista options, like the free Comodo&Defense+ or the Online Armor firewall but Defender can be put to use.

I'd have expected McAfee to turn off the Vista firewall on installation though.
When using a third party firewall you must disable the Vista firewall manually if it hasn't been done automatically.
    Cheers.

    Are you serious?
So if I have a router, I can just safely turn off the software firewall on my computer?
