Seems like AVG is your problem. I've found it's a horrible scanner for "in the wild" type of infections, though it does decently once it's definitions have been updated. For a better free AV, try Avira or Avast, if you want more protection, try out either Nod32 or Kaspersky.

PS. I'll report this post so a mod can move it to the AV section.

small recap - microsoft moved all of the functionality from internal Windows services into .dll files instead of .exe files. The problem is that you can't launch a .dll file directly from Windows, it has to be loaded up from a running executable (.exe). Thus the need of "svchost.exe".

So svchost does not pop up on its own, but invoked by apps using windows resources - in this case Spybot SD. You might want to look into another spyware utility that is not so intrusive as the spywares themselves. I prefer Spyware Balster.

    cheers ...

You can try to re-install AVG, but disable its linkscanner functionality BEFORE at the command line.

    Quote from AVG FAQ:

"If you wish to install AVG 8.0 Free Edition without the LinkScanner component, or uninstall this component from your program, please proceed as follows:

    * Download the AVG 8.0 Free Edition installation package from our website.
    * Run the installation with the parameters /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch. One way to achieve this is to:
o save the AVG Free installation file directly to disk C:\
o open menu Start -> Run
    o type
    c:\avg_free_stf_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch
    * The installation will be started, and AVG will be installed without the LinkScanner component."

    cheers ...

You may also just be better off formatting the hard drive and starting over with a clean install of the OS, and then installing A/V and anti-spyware before you let the thing back onto the internet. :D

Or you could try using system restore to restore yourself to a point when you didn't have these virus issues, then install Avira antivirus (free) and other anti-spyware apps, and clean your system out.
