I tried installing the AVG 8 Free anti-virus application from Grisoft a few days ago but each time I tried, it corrupted my IE7 such that it would crash at start-up as soon as I hit the IE icon.

Does any other have the same issue? I’m posting in the Lenovo forum as I wonder if it could be related to the specific ThinkPad configuration of Vista.

Thanks to confirm your experience installing AVG 8 Free here.

yeap. Installed AVG 8 and access connections stopped working. Fn+F5 would not work either. Updated and reinstalled access connections and everything seems fine.

I noticed connections problem too, same as you... Did you lose IE7 as well?

Thanks for the others to add to this.

I have yet to not use a ANTI-Virus application that doesn't slow down or cause problems to a computer.

I like ZoneAlarm the best right now. Just set it in auto-learn mode and it learns the users habits and optimizes security to flow with applications. Keeps security decent and doesn't seem to slow down the computer much.

Also it has a game mode.

Ive had it installed since day 1 and havent had any problems (since september.) Also, SonDa5, I think ZoneAlarm is a firewall app, not an AV. I may be wrong though since I don't use it

I also installed it fine on my X61 without any issues. Fn+F5 works fine and no problems with IE. I don't have Access Connections installed. I really like the Avast software.

I'm more interested to hear specifically about AVG 8 Free, but thanks for the comments on alternatives.

It may have to do with the Vista security levels then. How many of you installed it from a normal user account vs an administrator account?

Do you have UAC ON or OFF? Is IE7 configured to run in safe mode or not?

All these details may add-up to explain what I'm seeing. I'm currently using all the above securities ON, in a normal user account.

Any others with specific comments on AVG 8? Thanks

This is impossible, AVG 8 Free just came out a few days ago. It is interesting to hear from users running the paid version but please specify so we can differentiate.

I lost IE7 years ago :) So I can't comment on that. Firefox ran fine, never lost it. You should try contacting Grisoft. I did, and after 3 days got a reply asking me to unit test the various modules :) Hope everything is working now.

My mistake. I'm actually running the AVG 7.5 Free, not 8. I hadn't realized they updated the software.

Well, I found out that disabling UAC and setting my user account as an administrator cured the problems I had. IE7 works fine now. So it seems that the AVG bug is related to the added Vista security. I have had enough other issues the past weeks related to Vista securities that I am turning it all off and will run as admin as I did for years. I figure that having an anti-virus shield running permanently is sufficient to make the PC closed to attacks. Turning all this off has the added bonus of stopping the constant admin password required pop-ups :)

All those who said AVG 8 Free was running ok, can you confirm these 2 points:

    - are you running UAC on or off?

    - are you running within a normal user account or admin?

I'm curious to see trends here.

It was posted somewhere in the AVG Forum Faqs on Grisoft. According to a moderator, they plan to fix this issue in the next release.

if you disable it you get that annoying exclamation mark on the system tray. i suggest doing what he linked to get rid of the linkscanner and email scanner. It works nice and clean

Yes, I installed using the command line to avoid getting the LinkScanner. Funny enough, I found out after that, if you go to the advanced settings inside AVG, there is still something active related to LinkScanning... I checked that off as well just in case.

So, so far, as I see, all people reporting AVG 8 free works are not using UAC or using an admin account. Keep the reports coming!

I know this subject is old, but my NIS licence is expired now, and wanted to go with AVG 8 free, I have Vista HP SP1, the Redident Shield goes unactive from time to another and Windows Security center keeps warning that the anti virus is turned off!

I have the latest version of AVG.

t goes un active even if no browers opened, I don't want to turn off the UAC.

Is there a solution for that!?
