I want to disable UAC but I heard you should only disable it after a clean install or a reformat. If I disable UAC now after using my laptop for awile, what are the reppercussions?
I'm fully aware of how UAC works, so no discussion on telling me to leave it on. I just need to know what happens when I disable UAC now.

Yeah, turning off UAC will disable file and registry virtualization... so some programs may be unable to find their files or settings. Some can probably be fixed by just setting your preferences again... in the worst case you may need to reinstall some apps.

When you identify which apps need to be uninstalled, I would think it may be better to turn UAC back on for the uninstalling process, so it can find all the files and settings to uninstall. (Or you can just re-install over what's there I guess.)

Instead of turning off UAC, you could just turn off the prompts but keep the UAC protection active. If you go to Local Security Policy -> Local Policies -> Security Options, you will find an option that says, "UAC: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators."

I prefer the Elevate without prompting. That way you still benefit from the registry virtualization and privilege elevations yet not annoyed by the prompts when you are on an administrator account.

There are two other options, Prompt for consent (default) and prompt for credentials. Prompt for credentials forces you to type the admin password every time, while prompt for consent will still force you to type the password unless you are logged in as an admin.

I did that yesterday, i put it off ad then i had to restart my pc, when it came on strange stuff started happening some programmes never started up so i put UAC back on and restarted, norton keeps opening up everytime i put on my pc up to now, some programmes takes more time than usual to open so i would say be careful when you dealing with UAC.

I would just leave it on.

If you have SP1, it supposed to have reduced the number of prompts.

What are you guys running to get "annoyed" by UAC?

I got them all the time, did not really bother me but I started to get into that click without looking syndrom. So figured if I am just going to ignore it I may as well turn it off.

These days turning it off is the first thing I do when I can get into windows from a new install :p Never looked back.

I have turned it off WAYYY later like 6 months after using a computer and had no negative effects.

Google "UAC tweak" there's a software you can download. It will keep UAC on but turn off the prompts. I suspect its the same thing as surfasb posted, but still worth a try since UAC is beneficial in some instances.

Only thing I don't like about it is that I still get the Security warning when logging in, even though UAC is "on".

You can tell security center to not have popups and not show the icon if you so you're not annoyed by it all the time.

I did for a while... and for sure there were lesser prompt', particularly with the 'remember me' feature. It was looking pretty useful.

But for some reason I wasn't feeling really secure with this - probably it was because it was the time when I was beginning to work around Vista and understand the happenings.. may be I was doing fine with the added vista uac prompts, making myself sure about what I was doing. since with norton uac, upon usage, for installs for example, I observed the prompt' stop coming up after a while... and this I wasn't sure about with the program' I was trying to install.

By the way, I think this Norton UAC Tool is still a Beta, and though I didn't have issues with it myself, there are quiet a few issues going around in the Norton Forums!!!!! And for me, I thought it wasn't worth messing around with it either till the issues with Norton UAC were sorted out or till when I am comfortable with Vista and understanding how things work, and what I am doing with my system.

oh oh i know who tried it .. meeee :D

in my opinion it's better than disabling completely or leaving it as annoying as it is by default the remember me thingy is really handy

You guys must not have used NIS 2008 or 2009.

Awesome products. I'd recommend them to anyone.

Norton wasn't that bad honestly. It was when they made it a pain in the rear to uninstall back in the day. That completely destroyed their image.

I've heard from many people that NIS 2008 and 2009 are quite good. Given free alternatives, though, I still wouldn't pay for it.

Why did this thread get moved here...UAC is part of Windows OS, yes it's considered "security" but more of Windows OS.

I agree. Although it is a security feature, it is a part of the Windows Vista OS and should be discussed in that forum. All the other UAC threads up until now have remained in the Windows OS forum...
