    Hi everybody

I have tried AVG 8 for about 2 Weeks now. I has been nothing but an irritation and seemed to slow my system down considerably whilst costing me extra money because it checks every Google search page results for suspicious websites.

    1. I pay per MB downloaded and AVG 8 is constantly using precious MB to check and authenticate Google web links.

    2. For me, a total waste of time and money. I use my lappie to search and access technical info on the Internet 90% of the time to make my job easier. I don't frequent porn sites or click on dodgy links.

    3. The constant warnings from AVG 8 that "all is not up to date because an error occured linking to the server" or something like that drove nuts. AVG 7.5was happy with an update twice a week.

    4. I uninstalled AVG 8 today and reinstalled AVG 7.5. Heaven and it is still supported as I was able to download the latest updates without a problem.

I have my quick computer back with the Anti Virus version that I trust.

If AVG discontinue 7.5 support it is goodbye AVG for me.

I will look elsewhere for antivirus software that meets my simple needs.

    Cheers,
    Theo

You might want to try Avira free antivirus.

I got sick of the false positives, I switched to Avast and at least for today (my first full day with it installed) so far so good. I'll probably use it when I do my reformat.

    Ditto.

For some reason I couldn't stand the fact that if I were to switch back to AVG 7.5, I would be switching back to a previous version of an antivirus. I just went straight to the most up-to-date version of Avira.

I also installed AVG 8 and am having 0 problems with it. Here is something to try.

    1) via command line installation with parameter = /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch (that is how I did it)

    2) go into options and disable linkscanner functionality

    Thank's for the reply Padme

For me a bit late though as 7.5 is already reinstalled on my system and all is back to normal: in the backround virus protection. I prefer it that way.

I really don't want to fiddle with AVG 8 again now. I simply don't like it.

    Thank's though

    Cheers,
    Theo

@Theo. You do know that 7.5 will lose support by the end of the month, right?

Hey, I am the same as you. I switched to AVG 8.0 for a week and didn't like it at all. I also suggest switching to Avira AntiVir in the future. Been using it for a while now and it is great!

Just too bad then. I will look at other options out there. Somthing nice and simple that suits me and does the job properly.

    Cheers,

Avira Antivir kicks AVG right in teh arse!!

It is free, and it uses teh karsperky scanning engine, isn't a resource hog! the best free alternative that I install on all systems that I fix. I personally use NOD32 FTW

    Don't post bull**** information.
Avira does NOT use a Kaspersky engine, they build their OWN heuristic engines.
    Cheers.

Then that "someone" was wrong. Avast also uses it's own scan engine.

AOL Active virus shield (now discontinued) used kaspersky scan engine.

Again what does "teh" in your threads mean? Don't try to confuse people here.

    Yes. I'm very sure.
If Avira was using Kaspersky's engine why in the name of god would it outscore that rival in the latest AV-Comparatives pro-active test with clear numbers? Link
