On the day I received my laptop, I used the add and remove programs tool in Vista to remove trend micro pc - cillin. A few weeks later, I was browsing around in the control panel, and decided to check out the security panel - only to find that both the PC-cillin anti virus and firewall were still running. A search of my hard drive comes up with nothing with either the name PC cillin or trend micro.
I tried to talk to the Dell customer service, but they weren't helpful. One had me reboot into safe mode to see if I could see it on the list, but unsurprisingly it was not there. Another was about to try a remote computer control program, when my browser crashed. I don't want to deal with them anymore, so I'm wondering if anyone could let me know how to deal with this program and make it go away for good?

The problem is that I cannot get to those files - the trend micro folder was deleted after uninstallation. The computer doesn't seem to think it's still installed...but the firewall and anti virus are still there.

Suggest that you re-install PC-cillin and then use the PCC tool as illustrated in Lithus' link.

Have you tried cleaning up your registry with something like crap cleaner and winaso. Winaso is a pain to clean up your registry the first time, but after that you usually won't have many entries to fix (it only fixes 10 at a time). Also, this could be an issue with MS security center and not either of those programs. Sometimes, unless you clean out it's folder (I forgot how, if you need me to look it up again I will) it will still list some old programs. I remember it thought I had two firewalls up when I didn't. The problem was with security center not the program which was gone. btw I definitely don't check here too often so pm if you need that security center fix ie cleaning the registry didn't work.

I have also been using Trend Micro for the past year with no apparent problems. I just disable my internet connection and shut off Trend Micro.

Plus, I've never been able to so I wanted to add one Hopefully this fix works for you as well. PM me with the results.
1. Open "Control Panel"
2. Select "Performance and Maintenance" (if you see Admin tools, just click on that)
3. Select: "Administrative Tools"
4. Double-click "Services"
5. Locate: "Windows Management Instrumentation", right click on it and select "Stop"
6. Go to the "wbem" folder (C:\Windows\system32\wbem)
7. Locate the "Repository" folder and delete it (DELETE ONLY THE REPOSITORY FOLDER!!)
8. Repeat steps 1 - 5 but this time right click on "Windows Management Instrumentation" and select "Start". This will recreate the "Repository" folder.
9. Reboot your computer -
^Yep, that's how it's done.
That procedure should clean obsolete entries for the Security Center, just give it a few minutes to recreate the 'Repository' folder before step 9 (rebooting). -
Worked! Thank you!
