    Hi

In my old laptop I only used AVG free AV as it was way too slow.

I have ordered a new gaming laptop. I plan on using following:

    1. AVG Antivirus
    2. WIndows 7 Firewll
    3. CCleaner.

Will this be fine. Also Do I need to install MBAM also besides these?

I don't want too many security progrmmes running in background.

Do suggest if you think I should use some other AV, firewall etc

    Thanks

You don't need any if you know how to delete potential viruses off your computer, IMO. Antivirus only ever manages to hog resources for me and never does anything useful...

Good luck deleting a virus off of your computer when it's deleted your system restores and patched system files...

Anyways, AVG is pretty good. Use Adblock software in your browser and keep things up to date and you should be ok.

You may also want to consider EMET:
Download: EMET - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

You can force Java to use EMET, which will keep things secure.

Well my point was that what are the minimum number of softwares I need on my system.

I have read on most threads that AV+Firewall+Malaware should be enough?

You should only ever run one "always-on" antivirus: it's not "the more the merrier." If you like AVG, use it along with the stock W7 firewall. If you're using a security suite that includes a firewall such as Norton Internet Security or Eset Smart Security, disable the W7 firewall. CCleaner isn't really a malware remover, but it does have its uses.

I agree with what you have read, AV - MSE or AVG- Win 7 firewall - Malwarebytes - free version which does not run in background & have to manually update.

Howdy Before you take the AGV Path I would have a look at this Results and comments - www.matousec.com AVG Internet Security 03 % score in the test ouch :( And Comodo Internet Security %94 :)

The best anti virus software reviews was conducted recently by the matousec company. Comodo came out on top %94

Hopefully this will help with your choice of AV software, if its not to late the good thing about most AV programs is thy have free trials so you can first see if it fits your system before you buy.

Why Do People Love Comodo? 96% People Do (1,763 opinions) (most loved AV in the world with 96%)

TheArkTruth has a good point you can use just one Internet Security software or you can use Computer Security Software Represented By A Top Antivirus Software >>> Top Antivirus Software

Funny thing is though that Matousec doesn't test AV's. At all.
They test 'Security suites' and mostly the HIPS part. These are not AV detection tests.
Also keep in mind that Matousec has rigid 'level testing'.
If a program fails at test number 4 out of hundred, they stop testing and note that the program only scored 3% while tests 5 to 100 actually haven't been done at all. Fyi.

Did I read this correctly? NO Antivirus protection at all? I humbly and respectfully but vehemently disagree.....the best removal is not becoming infected in the first place....why would you possibly want to deal with removing threats once they've taken root in your system and perhaps have already been causing damage before symptoms arise...prevention is much easier..and as for hogging resources..it totally depends on which program you use....I use a suite (Norton Internet Security 2012) with Windows Firewall turned off..and it has an extremely light and virtually unnoticable footprint...I also have malwarebytes free version...which does not run in real time in the background but is there for me to update manually and use at my leisure for some extra piece of mind....just my 2 cents!

AV-Comparatives, AV-test.org and VirusBulletin (although the least interesting of those 3) and also smaller outfits like MRG/MalwareResearchGroup.

Melih has issues with half the world and their dog, I'm not touching those with a 30-feet pole.
More focus at their products and less ritual brouhaha would benefit Comodo Ltd imao.
What I use? Depends on the OS (on Linux almost nothing), new products posted at WildersSecurity.com etc.
On Windows I like HIPS, light virtualization like Sandboxie and BufferZone, OS functionality; integrity levels, EMET and such and especially a layered setup avoiding putting all my eggs in one basket.

if you don't have anything configured and just do proper windows updates, you'll get MSE for free. and that is good enough for all nonparanoid people out there. all i use since it's out. as do many many others.

ccleaner is not a security software per se. it's a cleaner, which can help or harm your systems performance (cleaning temporary internet files f.e. slows down your internet experience as you have to reload your web page content more often).

so, properly set up windows updates is enough to secure you nowadays (and MSE will be integrated in win8, even while not called that way anymore afaik)

HitManPro3 is an excellent AM scanner, the program will revert itself, after the 30-day trial period to a ' detection-only' AM scanner (no more removal), it incorporates Emsisoft+Ikarus+Dr.Web+G-Data(=Avast+BitDefender) detection besides their own in-house technology.
It's usually ahead of the pack in detecting 0-day malware like f.i. when TDL4 came out, afaic it's quality like MBAM although not a similar program mind you.
Spybot S&D 2.0 beta has been beta for so long, they might as well skip a number and call it 3.0 by now.
Check for EMET info; link and link, for HIPS you could read this; link but as you like Comodo/CIS, I'd assume you already are familiar with a HIPS like Comodo's Defense+.

-edit; Be aware that if you're interested in these kind of programs, you aren't in the nonparanoid group anymore though. :)
Boo!!! to all those who would be mad enough to even use mitigation techniques developed by Microsoft devs. Right, Dave?
-edit2; HitmanPro3 in their most recent beta, just as an example, also has an eye for stuff like a hijacked host file filled with ASCII, redirecting to sites you don't want to go to. Read up on host file BOM (byte order mark) obfuscation link

well, boo to all those who think that other companies that make a living out of security software are to trust more than those who make a living out of software that they have to secure.

but well, as paranoids are everywhere, there's money to make there for ever, i guess :)

What does trust or paranoia have to do with it? They all work, they all auto update, and they're all free. MSE, AVG, Avast, Avira all have more or less on-par performance just with different feature sets and layouts. Just like browsers, it comes down to personal choice and features/layout as they are all probably within arms reach of one another's performance. Choices are good.

Having an on-demand scanner to backup your real time AV is a good idea.

an antivirus company would go out of business if there are no viruses anymore => their goal is not to solve the virus problem

microsoft would not go out of business if there are no viruses anymore
=> their goal is to make their software as secure as possible.

but, to each it's own. people like to have their own things to think they're smart, and they like to oversecure with too much tools because of paranoya of all kinds of things that could happen.

clean installed windows with all updates (that includes by today MSE being installed automatically) + proper pc behaviour (no tweaking) is very very secure.

You are using EMET? Careful now, this means that you're part of the paranoid crowd, who don't follow proper PC behaviour.
Tweaking your OS with an actual MS program that's not been gracefully blessed by ' Holier-than-thou' means you're acting silly. ;)
Even when it's offering mitigation techniques that will become part of the OS in the future...

?! Are you kidding me. Fuzzy logic man strikes again.

Oncologists would be out of business if they cured cancer. Do they also surreptitiously hope cancer is never cured?

Car manufacturers would be done if someone came up with the perfect car. Do they and other industrial manufacturers engineer flaws into their vehicles and products on purpose on purpose? Maybe they even get kickbacks from insurance companies to overlook fatal flaws!

Boeing and Airbus surely hope a plane or two crashes each year so they can give their engineering department something to do.

Besides, that statement will never be true because there will never, ever, ever be a single program that can catch all viruses, nor will this fantasy era you describe ever come when there are simply 'no more viruses'. The goal for any a/v maker then, including MSE, is to get the most coverage reasonably possible, while offering the most user-friendly UI. Hence the fact that they are nearly all on par in performance, with their different selling points not being how many virus' they catch, but ease of use, additional features, volume licensing, etc. Some of AV companies come and go, but are you telling me Norton enjoys shooting itself in the foot? That's retarded.

So Windows + MSE autoupdating is the all encompassing coverage that will protect anyuser. And that's significantly different than Windows + Avast/Avira/AVG auto updating? Why? By what standards? Says who? Prove it. Otherwise your opinions stated as facts that you consider facts because they come from your experience as a sample size of... ONE, are not facts.

And all the 'tweakers' must be wrong, there's only one way to do things, your way/the as-microsoft-intended-way. If MS had koolaid you would be hooked up to via IV. This may come as a shocking epiphany to you, but your needs and methods are not the same as every other computer users out their, and their needs and methods may just not (shocking! I know!) fit into your model of usage. Jeez.

As far as trust goes, MS is run by human beings, so they make mistakes, often fine ones. Blind trust of any corp or their products is never good. They have had their fair share of security holes and bad behavior. One could also say MS has numerous product lines, and so their attention is divided. AV companies have a handful of products, so their products are better. Stupid and untrue I know, but, it's to prove a point. Clearly money or numbers or who makes what have nothing to do with what's the best product, because the most sold AV in terms of units is... McAfee.
