I'm barely running my newly installed Windows XP Media Center 2005 on my freshly formatted hard drive on the pretty Clevo M570RU, when I get a bunch of "ANA NICOLE SMITH HIDDEN SEXXX SCENE ZOMFG!!!!!!!!!" ads in Internet Explorer, when I'm running FireFox. I automatically knew it was a virus/Trojan/worm which had spawned new viruses. What surprises me is that I hadn't been to any weird sites. But one thing that did happen is that WinAntiSpyware2007 had somehow been installed. For those who don't know, it's a scam anti-spyware product, which takes $20 from you to "buy" their "software". It just installed more and more viruses.

I took a picture from SpyBot (this scan was after some other scans I did... you can imagine what it was initially like):

I think I have it all sorted out now.

Has anybody else had such an experience? I wasn't running Windows for more than 60 minutes, and I already had all this crap on here. Huh.

Yikes. Well, to prevent this from happening again, I suggest going to AVG and downloading their free anti-virus program. That's usually enough to catch sketchy things as they're loaded into your computer. And if you don't have a firewall, get one. Plenty of free ones out there that'll get the job done.

Download spyware blaster and keep it updated. You'll be surprised how much less spyware you have.

I tested this once myself. Uninstalled SWB, then surfed the web for 15 minutes. Scanned with adaware and got over 20 critical results. I installed and updated SWB again, and been surfing onlie for the past 2 weeks scanning with adaware daily and haven't gotten ONE critical spyware on my computer.

Read up about it, many people feel the same.

yes i would suggest running spybot, adaware 2007 then installing spywareblaster and to top it off install Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 with these settings. Set everything to auto block/disinfect/delete. Go to the "threats and exclusions tab and check everything. If you are useing a P2P app like limewire or utorrent you do not want stealth mode, go to firewall on main settings page, under filtration system there is a settings button click on it then go to zones and uncheck stealth mode but only if you are running a p2p app. On my computer i have it do a full system scan every night at 4:00am. Almost forgot you do not want to do a startup scan it will slow the computer to a crall on startup to turn it off go to startup objects on the main settings page and under "run mode" uncheck the box. I do not do any of the other scans just the my computer one. If you use a free email like yahoo mail that does not use outlook or another email app you can turn off anit spam just click on anit spam in the settings page and uncheck enable anti spam. As well as parental controls if you do not use it turn it off.

I assure you if you do these things you will never have to worry about viruses/spyware/adaware ever again... o yeah and also say goodbye to all popups and ads in internet explorer besides flash ads thanks to kaspersky

Edit: Also there is no need to switch to firefox if you like IE7 then stick with it. Switching to firefox is only ignoreing the problem seeing as you will still have viruses and spyware you just will not see *some* of the affects of those viruses and spyware.

wow that is quite a list you got there. are you on a lan? When i was in school, if I did a fresh install, the second i connected the pc to the network, it would be flooded with trojans by all the other infected PC's.. If you are in the same ballpark, make sure you are behind a router before you do any fresh installs.

AVG and spybot search and destroy are my tools of choice. I also run adaware right after I run spybot to pick up any left overs.

First off, stop using Internet Explorer. It's broken by design, and still hasn't been fixed. Secondly, those are almost all certainly cookies, and not actually installed software. SpyBot reports those because otherwise it wouldn't have a whole lot of anything to report in most instances, basically the program saying "Hey, look, I'm doing something! Honest!"

Use firefox, with adblock plus and noscript.
