Sometimes it couldn't update successfully via the update tab of the actual program, it always told me that I hadn't scanned my computer in a while when I scanned a few hours ago, and my scans always stopped at an item identified as "\.\\C\" or something like that. It was ridiculous.

Would it because because I have automatic Windows Update on and I am also trying to update via the tab? That would explain the troubles updating and such but what's with it stopping half way through?

I reinstalled it several times and finally left it uninstalled recently and chose a different AV program but I really liked its simplicity and interface and all and would like to reuse it in the future if I can get a better understanding of it and learn what I was doing wrong.

Also, I take it I should remove the MSE updates that Windows had installed considering that I no longer use it?

I have the latest version of MSE installed with win 7 home. I have windows updates set to automatic and never have to manually update MSE.
I would recommend installing Malwarebytes free version, updating it and running a full scan in safe mode,
I would also scan with the AV you have now in safe mode.
What AV do you have now?
If you want to go back to MSE, you may need to do a clean install of windows 7 first, The fact that scans were stopping with MSE seems to indicate some type of malware that is not being found .

    Well, JOSEA is correct.
I also recommend you download/upgrade/scan the computer with Malwarebytes (free version).
Go into Windows Safe mode after you downloaded/updated MBAM and scan away.

Either there might be a malware that snuck through inspite of MSE (which is of course possible as is with any other AV), or Windows got corrupted in some fashion (or something else).

Well, here's the thing. I had MSE installed on two computers and it happened on both of them. I doubt it was any sort of undetected malware stopping the scans. The weren't necessarily "stopped," they just hung at that item "\.\\C\" for a long time.

I have AVG for now and a full scan on this machine and it's fine. I also kept MSE on the other computer and it stopped hanging during the scans and hasn't been telling me that I haven't scanned even though I had.

I'm not sure, maybe just a hiccup due to updating both MSE and Windows?

    It's possible.
Although, do yourself a favour and don't use AVG.
    It's still relatively bloated.
    Use Avira or Avast instead.
