    Hi folks,

    Due to different reasons; loads of work, somewhat hectic private life and mainly my less-than-negative experience with Metro, I'm gonna stop maintaining the 'Best free security software thread'.

    With Windows 8 released, NBR members should have information on what free security software works well on the latest MS OS version and what's offering the best protection.
    But Metro is a no-go for me. I find it an infuriating GUI so I won't be doing my usual testing on Win8.
    Several NBR members have regularly posted solid answers, solutions and suggestions on (free) security software so to all those interested in taking over the thread, be my guest.

    I'll let of course the mods decide what happens next. Perhaps someone would like to take over or perhaps start a completely new security software thread but I'm signing off.

    cheers, Baserk.

    -edit;
    To make clear, I've really tried to get accustomed to Metro, using it over more than 8 weeks but it doesn't work out for me being forced to use a GUI that doesn't offer any compelling feature.
    Fact being that there is no way to switch off Metro and boot straight to classic start shell makes me stick with win7.
    Win8 offers serious improvements over Win7 and there's much to like about Win8 but Metro kills it in my case.

    Sorry to hear it Baserk. I also moved to Win 8, hated Start, installed Classic shell and uninstalled all metro apps. I used to use win 8 as win 7. But I must admit I switched back to Win 8 logic and use it as it was intended. I removed Classic shell :) Some nice apps started to appear on Marketplace, and I started to use keyboard shortcuts and swipes on touchpad. Now I actually find it ok.

    But yes, it is a personal choice and many people would like win 8 without new Start. If you want, try free classic shell on sourceforge.net that adds start button and boots straight into desktop. Welcome to Classic Shell

    Thanks for your efforts in your thread.

    Cheers,

    Ivan
