Hi I was wondering if anyone could give me their insight on what is possibly wrong with my laptop. It turns on fine but I am unable to open anything. This includes avast, msn, or any internet browser. Does anyone know that the problem could be? Thanks. I am using a different computer right now.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode and checking to see if the problem happens there, too?
-
Yes I've tried that. It still doesn't work.
-
Can you use your Windows 7 repair CD and boot into repair mode to perform a system restore?
-
I don't have a windows 7 repair CD. I just did a google search and it seems a lot of people have been having the same problem. Earlier today I did a virus scan on avast and found two viruses. After deleting them and restarting my laptop, the problem occurred.

Shame on avast for letting them through.
Ouch!
I'm sure you can search, download, and burn a repair disc. -
Another thing, can external hardrives carry viruses and are they able to transfer viruses to your computer if they do indeed contain infected files?
-
I believe that may be possible, but do not know for sure.

There's System Restore, which takes your computer to a previous point in time (based upon restore points) and there's a complete system recovery, which is "starting over".
I'm encouraging you to try System Restore. If you can't open anything up in Windows, then I doubt you can open system restore. That's why I'm recommending the Windows Repair Disc. Usually, you make it from Window's Backup and Restore utility. If you cannot create the disc, which you can do from ANY Win 7 (may have to be correct 32 or 64bit - not sure), then you might be able to download one.
Insert the disc and boot into the utility. You'll be able to select system restore and see if it solves your problem. If it does not, then download Parted Magic so that you can see your files and get your important data off before recovering your computer and starting over. -
Most likely a virus, sorry to inform you.
I'm surprised Avast! would let that nasty bugger through however.
Consider using Sandboxie in the future and Comodo's Firewall, Defense+, and HIPS and practice some safer browsing habits.
If you have a computer at a local library or a mother or father's or a sibling's computer, get a flash drive and transfer some powerful anti-virus scanners on to that flash drive. (Recommendations: Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, and Dr. Web.) Plug the flash drive into your computer and run the programs off the flash drive.
If that fails, go back to the beginning and do what anseio says and find a windows operating disc. -
OK i just got my laptop restored and now its working fine. the only problem is that now there is a constant annoying high pitch sound. i had this same problem with the other sony model, i think it was the c series? and also the screen is now a lot darker, despite the brightness being turned on 100%. does anyone know how to fix these problems? it would be greatly appreciated thanks.

If you did a full recovery, and are using a VAIO, then your automatic brightness may be turned on. You can turn it off via VAIO Control Center > display -
