Had problems with Avira (free personal version), so tried uninstalling so I could install latest version - wouldn't uninstall from control panel; message said "can't find Features Control File". Tried multiple times.

Then tried deleting complete Avira folder - got most of the contents out, but several files say I don't have permission to delete (although I'm owner/administrator). Tried ctl panel uninstall again - same result.

Tried Avira AntiVir RegistryCleaner to remove registry entries. Then tried ctl panel uninstall again - same result (can't find features control file).

Then tried to install new downloaded version of Avira personal. Says I must uninstall old version first and offers to do it for me. After "uninstall" and reboot, it just cycles bact to "must uninstall old version" again.

Caught in loop. How can I uninstall the old version???

I'm running Vista Home Premium, SP1 on Toshiba laptop Satellite L305-S5865. I have Windows Defender running until I can get Avira back up and running.

    Thanks,
    Jack

Try running CrapCleaner CCleaner its freeware.
In the begining did you stop all service of antivirus from running before you started the uninstall process?

Hmm...I have done this before with no problems. Do you have your download of the old version? If so try reinstalling that then uninstalling that.

To ensure you have completely remove old Avira.
Kindly go to your C :program Files/Avira(known as installation directory). Delete the whole Avira folder.
Download CCleaner, www.ccleaner.com and then, install CCleaner.
Run the Registry scanner in CCleaner. Fix all registries errors/bugs/sh!t.
    Restart your computer.

If you're not sure about the Avira got totally destroyed or not.
Download the new Avira Antivir Personal 9. Install it again.
    After that, uninstall it.
Run CCleaner(registry scan) and fix them all.
    Restart computer.
    VOILA.
