Nothing worked, tried malwarebytes software which would not open, tried to regedit, which would not open, even the task manager would not open!! Somehow anti-mal managed to close all programs I tried to open, in the end I had to reformat my computer!

this is the second time I got anti-mal attack, the first time I used malwarebyte to remove anti-mal, but this time I can not open any program.

Now that I computer is reformatted and clean, which security procedure do you recommend me so this does not happen again.

What made this even worse is that I lost some of files when I tried to back it up onto an external hard drive...

    thanks.

You were too hasty to reformat your hard drive and should have asked for advice here first. If the malicious program was closing everything before you had a chance there were still many options for you to prevent it from doing so. One option would have been to run a bootable recovery CD before the Operating System starts and then to run a malware scan, another would have been XP safe mode or the Recovery interface or you could have run a program that has features that prevents itself from being terminated.

Some things you can do to prevent this from happening again are to use the Firefox Browser with the Noscript plugin and Avast Antivirus. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and a decent firewall can help with outbound protection.

It is also a good idea to use Windows update to patch any security holes or exploits. In some cases you can have your system compromised just by going online with an unpatched system.

There are other security programs that I recommend but they are not very user friendly but they come under the area of non signature based behaviour monitors and sandboxing.

My sister got that virus, she didn't even realize it was a virus and used the notebook for days with it.

I don't know how you can avoid it, somehow I never have been infected with any virus (unintentionally), though I did download and run a few for a bit of fun with an old notebook.

Maybe if you try a different browser and disable unsafe active-x controls.

Try to not click on pop-ups by accident.

    What OS are you running?

    I am using windows 7.

I remember that I did start the computer in safe mode, and got the malwarebytes to scan my computer. But malwarebytes found nothing.

That is why I suggested Firefox and the Open source Noscript plugin. With that combination you won't have to disable active-x controls since everything will be disabled by default then you enable any trusted pages temporarily or permanently.
