I use MSE (Microsoft Security Essential) combine with MBAM (MalwareBytes Anti-Malware), both of them are free, though MBAM has a paid version but the free version has pretty much everything you need because what you miss is just a free software support and real time update/protection, since this can be fill be MSE. MSE & MBAM is a very good combination because as I notice, MSE seem to catch those MBAM miss and vice versa. But if you want a paid AV, then I can suggest you get Kaspersky Internet Security 2012, I never use that before but instead I use KIS 2011.

For BIOS version, I use the A05 because I havent try the A08 yet.

+1 for microsoft security essentials. Never had an issue with it yet and ive had it on several machines. I also use a program called malware bytes to scan for spyware and viruses every once in a while. Picks up anything Microsoft's program doesn't ;)

Edit: CDSDR Beat me to it this time :p

Have a look at Avast! for anti-virus. I've found MSE can sometimes use a ridiculous amount of RAM for no reason. Really though, you shouldn't need any. As long as you have brain enough not to click on obviously suspect emails, pop-ups, etc. then you'll be fine.

The last time I had anti-virus installed was somewhere around the 2003 mark, and I haven't had a single problem virus/malware-related since.

I was going to say avast also but i don't know if it's the best(only one i'm using). I'm also gonna give mse and malware bytes combo a try. if i catch something then im switching. i do find avast silent gaming mode very helpful.

ANYTHING other than McAfee is good!

Once you uninstall McAfee and restart your computer you will feel that you bought a new computer!

McAfee is the biggest resource hog in the world and it doesn't even catch viruses well!

Install Microsoft Security Essentials if you want free

Just had a nasty virus blow past my MSE. Getting a paid version of F-Secure and dumping MSE. This was the first virus Malwarebytes couldn't fix.

    What virus was that?
I would suggest Norton Internet Security or just Norton Antivirus.
I find F-Secure or Kaspersky great but a bit too heavy for my system.
I'm curious what your findings are.
(For a free antivirus I would suggest Panda Cloud Antivirus Free.)

I am using the AVG antivirus free 2012 on my Sony Vaio.

We have purchased Bitdefender Total Security 2012 for our office. It is doing well, but it could be better.

I'm using VIPRE antivirus lifetime license, it consumes very little CPU and doesn't slow down your game.

Have a google of "Anti virus" and you'll quickly see that Norton is the laughing stock. It's infamous for false positives, and it terrible with resources. This is from a couple of years ago, but I doubt they've got their act together much since then.

    @pengy: Good man. :)

It is my opinion if they GIVEAWAY anti virus with a new PC it is not worth running.

Norton and McAfee are given away with PC's and Laptops at major Electrical retailers where I live. They als sell them for SILLY prices. This is because no one will actually buy them and most people won't change it as they think its good because the shop said so.

Sorry, but version 2011, 2012 don't use a lot of resources.
No problems with false positive either.
Like you said information from a couple of years ago...

Incorrect; that's outdated information by a good 4 years or so.

Norton's antivirus software was rewritten from the ground up for the 2009 version, and ever since, it's been at the very top of detection ratings. Depending on the tests run and the versions, it's been either ahead of or neck-in-neck with other popular software such as Kaspersky and ESET's suites. It's consistently had better detection ratings than MSE. It also updates far more frequently than MSE, usually every 1-3 hours at least ("Pulse Updates").

Memory and CPU usage wise, all of NAV's processes combined is a tiny bit less than that of ESET's suite (tested on same machine). Its updates also use an undetectable amount of CPU resources, unlike some other suites (ie: MSE).

As for price, Norton is sold as a 3-license pack at Fry's Electronics for $0.00 after rebates (same price as Kaspersky, and cheaper than ESET). The only reason I use MSE is out of convenience, since it's easier to have all my machines and family members' machines running the same thing (and I'd rather not buy 8 licenses, regardless of rebates).

For the record, I've personally used Norton IS/AV, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, Kaspersky, ESET SS/NOD32, Avira, and MSE.

    ^+1.
NIS/NAV have indeed been completely rewritten and offer strong detection.
F.i. SONAR and Pulse Updates have made quite a difference.
Because of some quirks like the 'can't-be-stopped-idle-scan', I'm not their biggest fan but when choosing a paid-for AV/suite, Norton's products aren't bad at all.
I would opt for a different strategy then just using an AV or suite but when spending money and looking for 'easy' protection, NAV/NIS are certainly valid options.

I have used 2010/11 editions of NAV on machines running XP and Vista and NAV majorly restrict the usage of the machine as it is sapping so much of the little resources the old machines have.

Most users don't use their machines properly. They don't tidy up and have far too many desktop icons and their machines are old and not physically cleaned chuck in a copy of NAV and it can take up to 2 minutes before the machine will respond. This is what I have based my opinion on. I usually have to uninstall NAV to start the clean up process as it is crippling it.

So the 2009 rewrite is great for newer machines. No good for older machines.

I'm sorry if I'm keeping a simple thread going but I wanted to highlight specifically what I was basing my opinion on. This way it will give the OP fair and useful information.

Hi guys. initially i was using avast then after reading the mse and malware bytes post here i decided to give it a try. Then i decided to switch back to avast. I installed avast with mse and malware still on and it caused some problems which i fixed by uninstalling avast in safe mode. I restarted then proceeded to normal mode. uninstalled mse and malware then proceeded to install avast. done with updtaing and all. thing is now it takes a considerably longer time for my computer to load, about 10-20 seconds longer. the extra load time occurs between after my password input and getting to my desktop. any ideas on what's causing this and any possible solutions.

I will also try looking for a more appropriate thread but since people here recommended the following software they may also have some insight on what's causing these problems

Installing Avast while MSE was still running might have caused your current issue.
I would use the Avast uninstaller which you can find here; link.
Follow the steps on that page, reboot and only then install avast again.

It's also possible that the folder having info on your installed AV is messed up.
If uninstalling/re-installing avast doesn't work, then follow the steps from this post; link (note; instructions are for Vista/Win7-32 bit)

My NAV/NIS 2009-2011 experiences are based on running it, at various times, on my Core 2 Duo T500, a Pentium D (NetBurst) 2.66GHz desktop, a Celeron M 3.8GHz (NetBurst) desktop, and and my AMD Turion 64 1.6GHz Averatec. My T500 is the only one of these that had more than 1.5 GB of RAM.

If the NetBurst machines and my Averatec could run NAV/NIS with no noticeable detriment to performance, I doubt there would be significant performance impacts on any more recent machine.

    I'm afraid I strongly disagree.

It isn't coincidence every machine I have ever used with NAV is having troubles that disappear as soon as NAV is un-installed.

It may not have been the case for you. I don't and will not use NAV or any other AV. No cause to in the last 12+ years.
