I have been using the free version of AVG but just ordered a new laptop and do not want to use the Trend* software that comes on it. I found Kaspersky IS 2010 on sale @ Costco for $19.99 with free shipping until 02/28. Just thought I would share if anyone was in my shoes.

It is a good deal, but I am slowly becoming disenchanted with Kaspersky--and I have been a fan for along time.

Here is the lifecycle of most "security programs"

Create very nice, lightweight AntiVirus program.
    Add anti-spyware. Program slows down.
Add firewall. Program slows down more.
Add anti-spam. Program slows down more.
Throw in toolbar. Program slows down more.
Throw in proxy-server to pre-screen websites. Program slows down more.
Program becomes so bloated it bogs computers down to the point where nothing else runs.
    Rewrite program from scratch.

    Rinse, lather, repeat

I agree, especially with respect to Kaspersky. Nowadays I would much rather install the free versions of Avira, Avast, and MSE rather than install the latest bloated and buggy version of Kaspersky.

Well I heard to many reviews about trend trial edition that will be coming on my new laptop and have had TERRIBLE experience with Norton. AVG has been good to me on this old PC but if it's free then IMO they are getting "something" in return. I asked around and nobody stepped up with any info so when I found the Kaspersky for 19.99 with free shipping I jumped on it. The reviews I have read say it is decent software so I'll give it a try and if it doesn't work I guess I'll go back to AVG or something else. ;)

Well, it doesn't look like you asked here. ;)

Microsoft Security Essentials replaced up to four products for me and I have found no reason to give money for a 'better' one (I was using Avast Pro before).

Although you have paid for it, I suggest you try MSE and see if it works as well for you as it does for me (and many others).

    Good luck.

Hey yeah my bad on that one, it wasn't on this forum. Thanks for the heads up on MSE, I will give it a try. If I'm not happy with Kaspersky then I'm only out the 19.99 so it ain't all that bad.

Kaspersky is a great product--usually. Norton, McAfee, and other AV/IS that get a bad rap are often great products too--when they work.

I have never seen a fresh install of any product that is "terrible"--even Norrton IS 2008 or McAfee IS. The question is when (not IF) those programs eventually update themselves or get corrupt.

Pre 2009 Norton products eventually go south. McAfee products eventually go bad. In recent years, I have seen Kaspersky IS go south on some machines. I am starting to see Microsoft Security Essentials (already) go south on some machines.

The more complicated the software, the greater chance they will cause an issue. The Internet Security suites get their fingers deep into the OS and when the OS changes through updates or the Interent Security Suite changes due to updates, or a virus gets in and corrupts one part of the Internet Suite (let's say it kills the firewall), it takes the entire suite down with it.

Yeah my problem was with Norton a few years ago and it never was with it working but trying to get rid of it! I could NEVER get it off my computer(was a cooperate edition BTW) and neither could Norton's Tech support.
