as the title states, my GF's dad got some kind of virus on his laptop and normal scanning won't fix it.

anyone have a rootkit, or something more powerful to recommend? the last time i had to deal with this was like 4-5+ years ago and i forgot the program's names.

    thanks in advance!

Try using rkill before scanning with MBAM, or scan in safe mode.

    RKill Download

    1) Download and scan for all viruses / Malware using Adwcleaner = https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/

    2) Reboot after cleaning

    3) Download and install Malwarebytes AntiMalware and scan and clean all viruses found then reboot = https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

    4) after all is clean, uninstall her Antivirus then reboot, then download a good Antivirus!

    For free, I recommend= 360 Internet Security = 360 Internet Security

For Paid, get Norton Security, very light and has excellent detection / protection rate. One license can be used on 5 different devices (mobile and computers)

For and foremost, I'd like to thank u guys for the recommendations. I've tried most of the programs suggested and was only successful with some of them because some programs didn't have free removal.

I've been scanning this laptop, on and off, for like 2 weeks now and it still doesn't feel "right". Last week, my gf's dad had some crazy charges on his credit card and we're not sure if it has anything to do with all the viruses, and crap, that's on his laptop. He does shop online and pay his bills from his laptop.

Also, these stupid messages keep popping up:

After scanning and using root kits, the laptop will act ok for a day then all of a sudden the messages will continue to pop up and YouTube videos won't work anymore.

This is really starting to frustrate me because I can't seem to figure it out. I'm thinking about just rebooting the whole damn laptop with a fresh install.

You should do more than just think about it.

Problem was he didn't have any of the OEM CD's for me to do a fresh install with. I'm gonna have to find a spare USB drive to convert to a bootable disk and DL all the Windows files and drivers from scratch.

A computer damaged as much as this laptop, I would never bother repairing because even if you clean the viruses / malware, who knows what other system files it has now corrupted? It would have taken you way less time to have formatted it than the time you spent scanning and cleaning and still ended up with a crippled system.

yeah ... i'm going to do that now. i just have to find my USB to convert to FAT32 so that i can do a bootable drive for Win7 because he doesn't have any of the OEM CD's that came with his laptop.

    appreciate all the help, fellas.
