I am getting a new hard drive Friday, and plan to do a fresh Vista install. My question in the mean time is which is the better way to go on security? I have Trend Micro through my university, or am I really better off using some of the various free products out there (I was guessing I would use Avast, Comodo, AdAware, and SpyBot). Cost isn't an issue. I am leaning towards Trend Micro because it is all integrated into one package that I am familiar with and know how to use. But, will performance be better (Trend Micro hasn't seemed too good with Vista SP1) or will my protection really be that much better with these various free solutions?

Thanks in advance for the tips!

Ive been using AVG/Spybot S&D combo on all my systems. I havent had anything malicious happen so far

I cant say if trend micro is better because ive never tried it personally. I do know freeware is ALOT better and more effective than Norton AV

    Freeware and open source ftw!

I certainly like the idea of freeware, and when possible, choose to support it. But, I just want to make sure that I am not causing myself headaches by using 4 programs instead of just one.

If you want solid security, get NOD32 with Comodo Firewall Pro. Pay and Free come together in one nice package.
