Does anyone know of any free website based virus scanners that work for vista? I normally use AVG but I don't like the performance hit I take and the difficulty I have uninstalling it. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

When you say website based virus scanners do you mean the ones that allow you to do an online scan from a antivirus company? If so then kaspersky has an online virus scanner. All you have to do is go to their website and load it and it will scan your computer using the virus definitions on a web server. Trend micro also has an online scanner as well.

Hmm... No performance hit here with AVG.
By the way real-time protection does pay off sometimes.

I agree with Baserk. Trend Micro House Call is a good one. Kind of slow to scan, but it still works like charm. IMO, you should always have a real time scanner. I'd say AVG does a decent job. It's not resource intensive in any way and it installs/uninstalls in less than a minute. I'd say your computer's messed up...

Thanks for the help. I am using the TrendSecure for now. The problem with uninstalling AVG is that it installs several components that the uninstaller ignores and the processes run in the background long after the program was 'uninstalled'. Also, once installed, there was a noticeable difference in the overall performance on my older notebook. Maybe there was some confounding variable and maybe a Core 2 Duo wouldn't suffer the same problems, but I am not quite ready to go back to AVG just yet.

AVG even works on my mom's 750 MHz Pentium III processor with 256 Mb RAM! In your case, your system should have been more than capable of handling AVG so I'm guessing it's some kind of conflicting thing.

Well, if AVG didn't work out for you there is always Avast which is as equally, if not more superior than AVG. It's also free btw. Remember, you should always have a real time scanner installed on any Windows system.
