    Hey, guys!

    I just recently bought a laptop with a Vista 64 on it. Never had experience with a 64-bit OS before. I've always used Zone Alarm as my firewall of choice, but they don't have any compatible versions for this Vista. Could anyone recommend a good firewall?

    Comodo is still the best firewall Vista 64 bit regardless of price.

    you could try first the vista built in firewall. I'm using it until now and never had any security issue with my NB. Using vista business 64 bit

    imo i actually like a firewall called look n stop works great also. but commodo is a awesome firewall. outpost is great but really bloated like zone is imo

    also the firewall built into to kaspersky internet security 2009 is awesome from a suite that includes hips, a av anti-malware etc all in one

    I use the windows firewall with both inbound and outbound blocking. Outbound blocking is a little tricky to configure since some windows svchost services like windows update and windows time has to be let through. Here's some info:

    Allowing Windows Update:

    Add a rule named Windows Update allowing svchost.exe
    Restrict the Windows Update rule to the Windows Update Service
    If you use Vista x64 use the system32\svchost.exe not the x64 svchost

    Allowing Windows Time:

    Add a rule named Windows Time allowing svchost.exe
    Restrict the Windows Time rule to the Windows Time Service
    If you use Vista x64 use the system32\svchost.exe not the x64 svchost

    Allowing avast! services:

    Add a rule allowing avast.setup (update)
    Add a rule allowing ashMaiSv.exe (mail scanner)
    Add a rule allowing ashWebSv.exe (web scanner)
    If you use other avast services add rules allowing them through

    Allowing Other Programs:

    Adobe Updater, allow %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Adobe\Updater5\AdobeUpdater.exe

    FireFox, allow %ProgramFiles%\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe

    Java Update, allow %ProgramFiles%\Java\jre6\bin\jucheck.exe

    OpenOffice Update, allow C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 3\program\soffice.bin

    Windows Help and Support, allow %SystemRoot%\HelpPane.exe

    and so on ...
