I like AVG Anti-Virus (Free Version). I've run it alongside of Norton and found that anything the pay-for Norton found, the free-version of AVG was able to find, with no exceptions. As to Norton, I find it doesn't "play well" with some programs, so I don't recommend it for that particular reason. Otherwise, it is a perfectly fine anti-virus program.

You run it alongside Norton? :O I tried installing it, but it wouldn't let me install. It said there is already one anti-virus running!! :-|

I also use the Kaspersky engine. ZoneAlarm AntiVirus uses it in V7.

AVG 7.5 is my favorite. No frills anti-virus.

Since it's outdated, I use Avira now.

I've never run them both at the same time.
I would install one (say Norton) and do a full scan of my computer. I also had an old corrupted copy on a external HDD which I scanned, already knowing what it would find. I DID NOT repair/heal/delete any of the viruses/etc.
Then I uninstalled norton (if I were stringent, I would have made a back-up with the viruses and started all over again, but I didn't). Installed AVG (free version). Did a full scan on my computer and the external HDD and found the same # of results on both. They were both the same exact viruses found. So, I opted for AVG. It's free. It never caused me problems. It's less intensive on my machine (last time I checked). It is something you can easily recommend/download on a friends computer with problems (because it's low-maintenance/free). It simply works.
Now....If only AVG paid me for recommending them to everyone I talk too, ha-ha.

Note: Mind you, I haven't tried any of the other FREE anti-virus programs out there. I did two small tests, nothing fancy. Those could be better for all I know. Things change over time though anyhow. AVG might be the best today, but some months down the road they may not keep up to date with their virus database as well as the rest of the competition. It is hard to define a "best", lol. But, generally, the "free" guys can be just as competitive as the ones that cost $.

Kaspersky's = Not too sure. I got a LOT of BSODs when trying to use their products. I even had the pleasure of getting to try one of their corporate ones once (it, too, crashed my computer). It doesn't play nice with whatever is in my computers.

Just a follow-up. But for anyone seeking these answers, you should really check out

It's also from my opinnion looking at http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/ergebnisse/report17.pdf (last updated in Feb, 2008) that AVIRA is the BEST choice for free anti-virus protection. Avira also offers anti-rootkit protection (whereas AVG offers anti-spyware protection). Honestly, they are all fine choices, though. The best security to be had is always backups-backups-backups. Lol.

I think Kaspersky and NOD32 lost so badly only because they cost money. ;)

Avast! is my personal favourite (with Avira breathing down it's neck). ;)
I like the many configuration options, the (old) silly GUI, it's version for Linux etc.
