Well, somewhat of a surprise, but Eset just released the official version of Smart Security and Nod32 v4...

Haven't tried it yet...still using RC4, but from initial impressions of others, they've fixed none of the persistent problems (i.e. disrupted internet) that has been in the past RC and beta versions...

I'm quite disappointed in Eset for once...

Anyone else have any first impressions?

Well, I noticed that the US site's free trial isn't working atm, although the English version from the EU site is.

Even that aside though, they're having all sorts of problems with the early release from the unresolved issues and new ones: update issues, account issues, internet connectivity issues, install issues, you name it...

General rumor is that they just rushed it for some convention :p

Avira 9 comes out this month too. After ditching my woefully inadequate NIS2009, I was going to go with Eset pending them fixing all the bugs since it has the best 64-bit support. Now I guess I gotta test Avira 9 first.

    ah well...enough of my rant.

It worked pretty well for me on Vista 32-bit as well, but I needed an AV to use while testing Windows 7 64-bit, and NIS has compatibility issues there (can't save Word documents, disk overloads using utorrent, etc, some problems shutting off processes, etc.).

Plus, NIS's more advanced detection features aren't available in 64-bit.

I've had ESS 4 running on Vista 32bit for the past couple of days and it's been great. No issues here whatsoever.

I also had NIS2009 before and I think ESS is better. 2 major issues with NIS2009 (that Symantec is aware of but hasn't yet addressed) came up that don't exist with ESS.

Did you know that company Eset is from Slovakia. Yes, i love this country.

Its running even better, than ESS3. And those complaining are using cracked software.

I have the final version running on my computer right now. Seems like they fixed some of the problems as mentioned above. No problems for me since I installed it.

My one year subscription on NOD32 is almost up so I have to decide what I am going to do.

For those of us who have NOD32, is v4 an automatic upgrade, or do you have to pay extra? I am sure that it will be offered to me when I resubscribe, but I want to be prepared.

Listening carefully here to see if it is worth it, or whether I make the jump to another company.

make sure you see wilders forums before upgrading.. many issues imo need to be ironed out with ver4.

I suggest you wait a bit and try out the Avira 9 suite coming out this month first.

Support and eset response has been minimal since release, and a lot of the problems are, as of today, STILL unresolved.

That site only has v3 firewall results though. Eset supposedly made marked improvements in v4. I say supposedly because there are features" advertised as "new" in v4 that mysteriously don't quite seem to exist... ... ...

Yea, that firewall seems be the main source of most of the complaints...

    ...the nonexistent advertised HIPS...
...the problems with Windows Update (I've actually never run into this one yet)...
...the issues with simply getting an internet connection in the first place..
    ...the problems with wired connections...
...the slowdown issues (although I suspect this is mostly from people who didn't configure their firewalls right...but maybe i'm wrong on this)
    ....the dropped connections....the flooding problems...
    ...etc...etc...etc...

And as you mentioned, it's not as if you can simply keep using v3...since the firewall in that version just sucks :p

Thanks, guys, for the feedback on ESS v4.

Looks like I won't be making the leap just yet.

Too bad. Why do good companies always seem to mess up their best products?

    Thanks again!

My testing license for RC ends in few days, but I cannot remember of any problems with nod 32 v4. It was installed on Windows 7 build 7000. Well, windows is not the OS I use very often now.

yah yah yah - I remember you was a Kaspersky man. How you could ever think nod 32 may be better and even try it!!!

This your "criticism" is supposed to help selling Russian FSB product Kaspersky AV better, isn't it? :) This simple marketing works with those who have no memory and understanding. Isn't it? :)

I've been using version 4 for a few days now, and so far I've had no problems whatsoever. Then again, I had no problems with version 3 as well!

EDIT - Just to make it clear, I only have NOD32 x86-64 anti-virus installed, and not the entire suite or whatever it's called. I use COMODO as my firewall.

Same here. Not a single issue with ESS 4 on 6 machines for over a week now. It's been a pleasure to use actually and very light on resources (at least as good as NIS2009 in that regard). But we've never used version 3 so I can't compare and this is all with 32bit versions.
