    Hi,

Pardon me for this is my first post....

I am still pondering about what Anti-Virus Software To Buy. I hear that norton antivirus 2009 has improved a lot. But on the other hand, more people swear upon the reliable protection of NOD32. I want to find a replacement for my present anti virus (Norton Antivirus 2008). My laptop is a sony vaio NR110E running windows vista home premium with 1GB of RAM. Which would be a better buy for me. Oh, and I do Programming, I use microsoft expression studio, but it is mostly for entertainment, typing and websurfing

Thanks In advance. And Hello From the Philippines.
    :D

Thanks for the quick reply royk50. But overall, which is better for my PC's Specs and my needs. And if possible, lenghten my battery life just a tad bit.

Well, it's hard to say since I rarely ever catch viruses, so I have to speak with other people's testing of course. Using that thread...and you can google it...ESET NOD32 wins.

I'm also using NOD32 and, so far, it has caught all the nasties that people have given me on flash drives. As already indicated above, it is very light on resource requirements.

Norton AV used to be a resource hog but I read somewhere that NAV 2009 has been rebuilt.

I have used NOD32 in the past and love it. I just started using Norton Gaming Edition and really like it. Norton uses only 4 megs of ram to run and does not slow the system down at all. Anyhow which ever you go with, you will be happy.

Like John Ratsey wrote, Norton's newest AV and Security Suite have had a major overhaul and imo a positive one.
If you still have a valid license for NAV 2008, you can upgrade to NAV 2009 with your current license key.
Check how much resources it uses (on idle/full scan/during updates) and download a trial version of NOD32 later on to compare them yourself (uninstall NAV before ofcourse).
In the most recent AV-Comparatives real-time protection test ( PDF link), Norton scored third place with 99% detection and NOD32 scored 8th with 96.6%.
My personal favourite is Avira Antivir, it has the highest detection rate in the linked test (99,6%), it's light on resources and it's free version is enough for my needs. It produces more false positives then NOD32 or NAV though.
    Cheers.

Nod32 is fine. It also works fine together with bitdefender whose previous year edition you can get for free, and which complements nod32 with its heuristic recognition algorithms.

What is the difference between NOD32 OEM and It's retail counterpart. Because here in our area, The OEM version of NOD32 is 50% cheaper. And Is it possible to use a norton 2008 serial no. to extend my present subscription?

Edit: I downloaded NOD32 earlier, and I like it. Very Fast and Streamlined. It made my system appear faster, will see with testing. Overall, i'm very pleased.

That's why year on year I stick with ESET, being number one in overall detection is worthless to me if it means producing so many false positives that I end up ignoring every popup after a couple months, meaning I'm likely to end up ignoring any actual threats.

    ESET just works™.

thats a bit over the top.
avira gives no false positives unless you start downloading key generators and that kinda of stuff that many other av engines block as well (norton is a prime example).

i never had any file that was downloaded from a reputable site tagged as infected. for the average joe being over protective is not a bad choice.

thats not to belittle esset, if i would pay for av i would go esset.
    (avira charges too much)

I think i'm sticking to NOD32.. It's fast and efficient. And it managed to increase my battery life by 10 mins.. Not much, but it's an increase.. And I love it's barely there footprint.

imo anything from 3.0 on i will not run. wayyyy to many issues and if you see the forums over at wilders even the version 4 betas are STILL HAVING the very same issues people reported with the version 3.x ones.. i have given up on eset and will no longer use it. imo believe it or not nortons 2009 is LIGHTER on my system than eset is..

Best advice is for you to test the two on YOUR system.

IME, I would select Norton 2009; I have not used their AV for over 7 years because of bloat and slowdowns but the present version is a very pleasant surprise. Very light in real-time; pulse updates, an excellent support forum and detection rates have improved a lot. I have had no problems in nearly 2 months of use on my laptop.

In contrast NOD 3 seems to have been a step backward compared to the version 2 and currently they have version 4 in beta. Support at Wilders Security is good but they can be very slow in adding threats to the database. Expensive when compared to Norton AV, particularly with the rebates/cheap deals for Norton.
