Currently I have Avast 5 Free. Would running another antivirus program, say Avira 10, be beneficial in security protection? My computer is quite fast so I don't think it will slow down my computer. What will it benefit and what are the drawbacks of dual antivirus software?

No, do not run two antivirus programs at the same time...even installing two at a time is a bad idea. In fact, most AV programs do their best to detect if another program is installed and will warn you/not install until the other program is gone.

The reason why is not only does it slow down your computer, but they can interfere with each other.

Some Antivirus like Avast give you the incompatibility message. Avast old version even give you the incompability message with firewalls like ZoneAlarm.

There is really no point in having 2 av's running simultaneously.

Actually, having 2 av's running at the same time is possible.
I've observed it on several systems, but ultimately there's no point in it as it creates a larger strain on the system and could result in problems down the line.
Just remain with Avast, and keep Malwarebytes as an on-demand scanner.

Well apart from it not being recommended, the two AV would not get along..

With one good antivirus program on your comp, you will not be any more secure if you try to add another and you will only cause problems.
