I downloaded the personal classic free edition of avira, but it doesn't have a license or serial number and won't update because of this. Does this version offer free updates like AVG, if not then I'm probably going back to AVG. Thank you

avira personal classic definitely has free updates... it automatically gives a free version license while installing..
wen you first open the avira GUI, you see that it says wen your free version license ends..but dont worry it automatically gets new free version licenses while updating..try uninstallin and then reinstall again.. it should work..

I uninstalled and reinstalled the program, but at the UI the licence, serial and validation date is still blank and it won't scan. I remember when I installed Avira on my xp computer, there was updates. What gives?

I think this problem had to do with the Norton Removal Tool. Baserk has a link to the fix so i suggest you just wait a little while for him to see this thread.

This is not alone because of the NRT, but avira fails to create necessary folder/registry entries needed for updating during installation. This is partly avira's fault too as this happens only with avira.

I don't believe it's Avira's fault as they were not the ones to install Norton on your system. That's like blaming Windows Vista for one of your software not working. It's the software vendor that needs to update.

Does this bug concern only Avira?
i mean: if i would delete Norton with its tool, and then install NOD32, then would i get a faulty update in NOD32?

I believe this bug only affects Avira Antivir.
