Not sure whether to keep Avira free home edition or go back to AVG free. The thing I like about AVG was that you could right click on the icon in the tray and exit the whole program to shut it down if you want to play a game. With avira it seems you can only make it "inactive" in the tray and im worried that even whilst inactive it still could hinder game performance as it is still using resources to keep running.

Anything running will have an effect on performance but that does not mean you will see it. There are very few AVs that would slow down your gaming as they mainly would suck on ram and if you have a decent amount of ram your fine

The highest and the worst anti virus would be nortons product I guess as they would eat the ram raw even if you got 4gb.....because they always keep running in silent background mode......So, far its the heaviest of all antivirus programs on this planet...........

Even worse than Norton is McAfee Virus Scan! the biggest and most useless resource hogs !, yet, most companies use them!

Agreed Norton 2009 is vastly improved in comparison to its predecessors.

Regarding the topic, Avira Free is much better than AVG Free and it takes up very less RAM. Only the guard is active in the background and there are no background scanning going on.
