Do you guys switch off Windows Defender? I already have Avira PE on. I switch off scheduled scanning from Windows Defender but left real time protection on. Do I really need both of them running real time protection?

SI! I have Spyware blaster as a passive defense system and Spybot SD as my active+passive solution. AVG also has a built-in module, haven't tested it though.

I did, but only because I use Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 - else I would have left it on.

I think it is a tad pointless if I have one of the best Security Suites on my laptop.

I use BitDefender, and it replaces Windows Defender and turns it off during install....FWIW :D

I keep Windows Defender on. Hard to say if it's actually helping though :p

I switch it off. I have Symantec Endpoint 11.0 and Winpatrol running in its place.

    I also leave it running.

Although it was turned off for a brief period while I was trying out CounterSpy recently.

Still, WindowsDefender (nor CounterSpy, AdAware, SuperAntiSpyWare, MalwareBytesAntiMalWare, GMER, HiJackThis) has never found anything on my PC.

I usually turn it off, as it has never found anything for me. Its also a lot less Windows Updates to deal with......

Avira is more antivirus than antispyware. I'd keep Defender on unless/until you are using other antispyware programs with both real-time protection and on-demand scanning. Defender can be configured to scan weekly instead of daily, which may be a good compromise.

I keep windows defender turned on, i haven't turned it off coz it doesn't have any conflict with my Norton Anti virus. :)

while i guess its needed, as the slightest change in the windows registry modified by any unknown software will be tracked by windows defender and will prompt you whether to allow or not.

    :)
