Currently, I use Avira Antivir FREE as my main anti virus. However, it doesn't include spyware scanning, at least thats what the site says.

I also use Comodo Firewall. it seems very powerful and even more meticulous than Kaspersky's firewall, which I used for 2 years.

I am seeking an antispyware that is free but runs in real time protection. I currently have spyware doctor installed. Is this anygood? does it actively detect spyware before it installs on my system?

Not only do I seek an antispyware that scans to remove malware, but also PREVENTS it before even touching my harddrive (as antivir does with viruses)

any ideas? i checked out the "best free" topic but didnt decide...

Use Spybot S&D. If you have Vista, you should have Windows Defender enabled by default. Its not the best but it should catch the big ones.

As flipfire suggested Spybot S&D will do the job.

Your setup is basically what I use and it has served me well. The combination of the three programs haven't conflicted with each other at all, which is excellent.

I'd also suggest using Sandboxi. Running inside a sandbox has kept my machine as clean as the day I installed it. (Sandboxie is a program that allows you to browse the web and install programs without altering your system, so if a program proves to be malicious, it likely won't seep into your computer.)

There is not a program that is "unstoppable". The only way that you can be 100% assured of not getting malware is not to connect to the Internet and don't install anything other than the most reputable software companies using only their media.

That being said, the free programs are not as functional and do not provide the protection that can be termed "unstoppable". However, there are decent ones.

Read the sticky at the top of the page for recommended programs.

For antispyware, I favor Spybot, SUPER Anti-Spyware and MalwareBytes Malware Destroyer

By spybot, do you mean using the "tea timer" option? otherwise, how is it realtime?

Take a look at ThreatFire (formerly Cyberhawk), it's a real-time behavioural blocker.
Great app. with 8 Mb mem usage.

Another app. you might want to read about is Comodo BoClean which is a real-time (duh) memory scanner.
The only problem I have with BoClean is that it doesn't check downloads; for instance, you could accidentally download a trojan but BoClean will only come into action when the trojan is executed. Only then BoClean will terminate it.

Keep in mind though that NO program offers a 100% guarantee.

As others have mentioned, there is no "unstoppable" protection program or programs. Anyway, the one's I favor as my primary line of defense are Online Armor, Avira, and SuperAntiSpyware. I should note that I'm not running any active anti spyware protection though some of my programs can offer that level of protection. I think a good firewall and a good active protection anti-virus cover the necessary bases. If I somehow did get a spyware program on here, my firewall and Winpatrol would most likely alert me.

my favorite combo isn't a free one, it costs a good sum but it is worth it.

the antivirus is eset's NOD32. it has its own firewall and works best of any antivirus i have ever seen. Protects against a good amount of spyware too.

For spyware i use ASO or tuneup utilities. they both have amazing antispyware tools, though ASO is better.
