I'm doing a fresh install of Windows XP (again.) and am thinking about ditching Trend Micro. Therefore, I'm probably going to use free security programs to create a suite.

    Choices:

    AV-
Avira (the only free AV that I love)

    AM-
    Part of ZoneAlarm Pro

    F-
    ZoneAlarm Pro

    Good so far? :D

Taking advantage of the ZoneAlarm offer eh? ;) I've used it in the past (like Win 98 in the year 2003 past :p) and didn't really care for it, also had some trouble uninstalling it. However PCMag says it's pretty good, and it's probably improved since then. Can't beat getting it for free either. :)

Indeed, In some ways it was really ahead of it's time. (WebTV for Windows, etc.) I ran it for a while after XP came out, finally upgrading to XP in 2007.

You might want to check out Online Armor at tallemu.com. They have both free and paid versions. I have used Norton, McAfee and Zone Alarm. Yeah, I'm old. I tried Comodo briefly, but settled on Online Armor and have been happy. It is very customizable and has options for auto pilot and manual tweaking. Plus they are a small company (Australian) and are very responsive to email questions and suggestions. For A/V I use Vipre from sunbeltsoftware.com Both of these programs are very easy on the memory too. Both also offer multiple computer licenses.

Symantec has some great suites available. McAfee is the choice of many people because of its non-intrusiveness.

The security software in my sig have worked great together. I have SASPro ($20 upgrade) so it runs full time, but scan with Malwarebytes and A2 from time to time.

I think come next year, when Comodo adds heuristics to it's AV, CIS will be the way to go if you want a true "security suite".

    Please do not get Mcafee.

I mean, you literally might as well have a thousand viruses running around your computer.

    Z said it best man.

You could literally throw your laptop off a cliff and it would be in better shape than if you installed Mcafee. I am not joking.

I threw my laptop off the Grand Canyon this one time, and besides the "[" key being broken nothing else was wrong. I then installed Mcafee and my laptop started leaking green ooze from the vents at which point the laptop blew up and destroyed itself.

I exaggerate, but you get my point.
