Have free sample of Norton on my new laptop, I tried system restore for the first time but recieved message that it possibly could not work because of a security program. I have Avast, malwarebytes, and Norton and never had problems with the first two. Norton support does not respond. Which control should I turn off? Antispyware, anti-virus,advanced protection,Smart firewall, intrusion prot.,e-mail-mess.,identity safe, anti-phishing, or just uninstall the entire program?

Yes, Norton stops "system restore" from running. Make you sure to disable real time protection and turn off "Early load" before you restore your system to an earlier state.

I have Norton Internet Security 2010 (this applies to it and previous versions) and used the instructions at the Symantec site to do successful system restores. Basically you just need to turn off the tamper proof protection.
Here is a link with all the info (it is a print instruction sheet):

i never use system restore anyway. i always either use macrium or shadow protect so no need for it for me.

Thanx, at least it is not bloated and slow scanning as in previous versions. Still too intrusive.

you will find issues like this with many av's now. they all have some sort of self protection on them nowadays they do this so someone can not disable them either remotely or from malware installed on your system..

I wanted to chime in here and provide you with the proper answer regarding the System Restore feature in Windows when a Norton product is installed. Norton products do NOT stop the System Restore function from working, however, there is a component in all 2009-1010 Norton products called "Norton Product Tamper Protection" which needs to be temporarily disabled before you can complete a System Restore. You should not disable the active, real-time protection called "Auto-Protect" as that will leave your system with no real-time protection against threats.
If you can let me know which Norton product and version you have installed, I can then provide you with the necessary steps to temporarily disable this feature.
Thanks,

great to see you here still mike

yes turning off the tamper protection item did it. I successfully did a system restore.

Thanks for the update and I'm glad to hear you were able to complete the System Restore.
Thanks,

Could norton cause a system restore conflict?
