I recently came across a blog which stated that Comodo Basic does not offer any leak protection. Apparently, it's the Defense+ module that enables leak protection in Comodo 3. Before, Comodo 2.4 had leak protection built-in. The blogger suggests either installing Online Armor if you have XP, or installing Comodo 3.0 Advanced if you have Vista. Even though this is a blogger, it does seem legit considering that both Online Armor and Comodo have responded to some of the information it presents.

Here's the blog where I got the info from: http://blog.scotsnewsletter.com/2008/01/20/do-not-rely-on-comodo-3s-basic-firewall/

I used leaktest just a little while ago and although i had defense+ turned off i could select whether or not i wanted the app to run. Also, threatfire secured the "threat".

I don't know since it seems like Comodo's CEO is stating that Defense+ or at least a HIPS program is needed for leak protection. Here's something Comodo's CEO posted with bolds by me:

"Now, I and Egemen had a chat (phone call) with Scott last week about our firewall. There we explained its capabilities. At no stage did we say CPF has no "outbound leak protection"!!! I am surprised that he just ran that story with that misunderstanding. Very sad indeed! Obviously Scott must have misunderstood some of what we said. Of course CFP v3 in simple firewall mode has "outbound protection" and a pretty good one too! The Leak resistance (eg: protection against malware killing the firewall etc) comes from Defense+ (which is built into v3!)."

Then in Scot's rebuttal to Comodo he stated he got this response from a VP in Comodo:

"As far your question around whether 3.0 “Basic” is less “protective” . Not sure how to answer that. 3.0 is meant to run with Defense + running but it would be accurate to say that Defense + module is needed to protect against “leaks”"

This was posted in response to this:

"CFP 3 current does not have an Anti-Leak mode similar to CFP 2.4. If Defense+ is disabled, unless it is detected as a virus, leaking is possible.(3.1 or 3.2 will have an anti leak mode)"

Here are the articles where I got this from (Scot's rebuttal and Comodo's response):

Also, Online Armor was pretty mad at what the Comodo CEO posted about them so I'll post their response as well:

Think the early versions of Comodo had no leak prot if defense+ not enabled however the latest version 3...16... has option for basic firewall and leak protection with defense+ on or off at your option.

I'm glad Comodo addressed the problems with their firewall, but I'm not so happy about how they bashed everyone first.
