Hi, I've been using the same Ad-Aware for months but all of a sudden it's giving me a problem. When I click connect to check for updates, it hangs on 5% for a second before giving me an "Error retrieving updates" message. Would appreciate any help with a solution. I am using Ad-Aware SE Personal v1.06r1 on Vista. It was fine for a very long time and I haven't changed any settings, installed any programs or anything else. I know you can manually install the updates but I would prefer to have this fixed. thanks

Have you checked to see if there is an upgraded version of the program you're using? Could be your version isnt supported anymore. I see on download.com that Ad-Aware 2007 is on version 7.0.2.6, and looks like it supports Vista. Might want to give that version a shot

Can you re-install it? That's what I think I'd do.

If not, maybe there's some problem in the update chain. Are you connected to the Internet? Has the update site changed? Check out the website for the program and see if your update link is correct.

Adaware does the same thing, off and on, on my computer, too. Not sure what the problem is, but I don't worry too much. I've installed several spyware programs to use when this happens.

FWIW: Spybot doesn't seem to update completely either. So I now have Spybot, Adaware, AVG, a-Squared and SpywareTerminator. There's nothing wrong with my machine, and I'm not a paranoid nut-case; Spybot and Adaware just haven't been working as well lately as they have in the past.

FWIW Pt II: The trial version of CounterSpy worked very well and I'm considering paying for it. It's only $20, but with so many free apps available, this almost seems ludicrous.

Ad-Aware SE is an older version but according to most people it's better than Ad-Aware 2007. It's compatible with Vista and had no trouble installing new updates, until now. I have tried reinstalling without any luck. Nothing else has changed that I'm aware of.

I have the same problem with my Ad-Aware SE.

The way i update it now is do it manually. Go to this link and on the right hand side click the download Ad-Aware SE definition file.

Then extract the file, and copy and paste it in the default directory C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Professional

Replace the exisiting "defs.ref" file and your done.

I have both spybot 1.4 updates fine on Vista 32bit. I have download the 1.52 but not installed as yet.
Ad-aware 1.6 that to was updating fine up until last week when I remove it. As for your problem updating just download the def file and place it in ad-aware program folder..
You need the file to your right on this link http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/

Yeah, My AD-aware does the same thing....hangs up at 5 percent. Ever since they released the version that is not free, Ad-ware free went down the tubes.

Then use spybot. Or better yet, a-squared free.

Spybot is good, but not enough by itself. Ad-ware will remove like 30 items...while spybot might only find 10 items. I admit, I don't understand why really. Spybot will get rid of the really nasty stuff though. It cleaned something called E-anthology off of my pc one time a few years ago (a severe type of spyware, or whatever it was) nothing else could remove it, but spybot zapped it!!!

E-anthology was so bad it would automatically uninstall ad-aware, without asking me. It took me a long time to get rid of that crap. Thanks spybot!

Right now i'm using a-squared instead of spybot, i uninstalled spybot a little while ago. I might go for a-squared too because i never catch anything and comodo and antivir should do me fine.

Thanks guys. I also use spybot but it has never found a single thing. Also running antivir and comodo, and recently installed Threatfire.

Try running Spybot and Spyware Blaster.
