Buy NIS for $9.99 after rebates or use MSE?

My subscription to NIS is up in about 2 months. This week, Offfice Depot has the 3 pc NIS 2010 for 69.99, less a $40 rebate and a $20 upgrade rebate for a net cost of 9.99. I am debating whether to pick this up now, or should I let the subscription expire and just use MSE? I have been a long time Norton user and have had very good luck with their products. NIS 2008 and 2009 were problem free.

    Thoughts and opinions? Thanks.

If you're happy with NIS and don't mind paying for it, there is nothing wrong with doing that. NIS 2010 is a very good product. I'm using it now actually.

But, as a free alternative, MSE is a great choice. It doesn't have many of the bells and whistles that NIS does, but it gets the job done.

Either of these choices work just fine.

Is that 10$ per license or 10$ overall?
At 10$ overal you can buy it and keep a spare! By the way - wouldn't that license still activate in 1 year and give a full year with the latest version?

Check up on it - heck, you may even buy 10 and sell them on Ebay for 20$ a piece :D

If you aren't affected by the recession you can always buy 1 to have it handy - in case you don't like Microsoft Security Essentials.

I'm hardly the one, advocating paid-for security software on this forum.
But, if you don't mind spending $9.99, NIS2010 is very well worth it.
    Especially if it's a 3-pack.
As it costs much more here in the Netherlands, I'd buy it asap for such a price.
If not for me, then for my parents/relatives/family.

    /off topic
Is this the (new) base price for NIS2010 in the USA now? I read about those local rebates/$9.99 price all the time here on NBR.
It's $110.29 here in NL for a new subscription and $73.53 for a subscription renewal...
Maybe you can start a business. ;)

It really depends on how much you think you need and what your perception is (along with your habits). If you're accustomed to NIS, then I say go for it. Personally, I don't like paying subscriptions for software (I figure that I should be paying for a lifetime license that only gets definitions and no new features), so I just go with free stuff (my current setup is Comodo Firewall and Avira Antivir as firewall/antivirus as well as real-time protection, and SUPERAntispyware and Malewarebytes for on-demand malware).

Wow, for $9.99 I'd get it. Wish we had that deal here in Canada. Office Depot has it for $59.99 but no mention of a rebate; is the rebate US only? Do you have a link to the rebate form?

FWIW, I'm currently using MSE and very happy with it.

As much as I love NIS 2010, I'm a typical broke college student. LOL. So as it stands, I'm saving money when and where I can. I still have some time on my current subscription, but once it runs out, I'll be moving to MSE for the time being.

I hear you. MSE has been great. Still, for $9.99 I'd get NIS. I just don't see the value any more with many of the paid AVs especially up here in Canada where they're typically sold at full pop with hardly ever any discounts or rebates unlike the States. There are a ton of excellent free alternatives.

I went to the local Office Depot on Saturday and they were sold out. I should have ordered it online, but I didn't. I'll keep my eyes open for another good deal on this or I may try MSE.

In SoCalif Frys currently has Norton AntiVirus 2010 for 9.99 after rebates. Unlike prior versions it does include antivirus and firewall.

NAV 2010 doesn't include a firewall. You have to get Norton Internet Security if you want an all in one security suite.

Just get MSE and put an end to this discussion.
MSE will serve your needs well and it is free...
I never see the need to pay for something that is not gonna make a difference.
    You are safe with MSE.

Fry's regularly had NIS09 triple-license packs for $9.99 after rebates and occasionally for $0.00 after rebates, it's good to see this continuing with NIS10. It's another reason I use Norton, in addition to its great security and resource usage.

    yes agree

Although MSE is free and good, for $9.99 nis2010 wins.

nah, for 0$ MSE would still win. it's made by a company who cares about security, and not about money making by spreading fear.

oh no, that topic again :)

but in short, MSE works very well, and does sure not fake any unneeded security-extra-tools or something like others do.

so i'd rather invest those 10$ in .. dunno.. more ram? (i bought 2gb for that price half a year ago :))

I ended up buying NIS at Staples for 69.99 less a $40 mail in rebate. 29.99 is ok, but I kick myself for missing it for 9.99. He who hesitates loses.
