I have the free version of Avira running. It did miss a trojan that super anti spyware found from a program I downloaded off the web.

I even manually scanned it with Avira.

I saw that super anti spyware requires me to pay for it to have it always scanning for that stuff.

What is a good free one that will actually monitor things such as this?

You do not want two active scanning programs running at once, it will severely degrade your system's performance. Run regular AntiSpyware scans and browse responsibly for best results.

You could give ThreatFire a run.
It's a free behavioural blocker offering real-time protection; it checks what behaviour a file will likely show.
A downloaded file that 'looks' like it has patterns similar to a trojan, will give a warning.
It's up to you whether you want to continue saving/executing it.
ThreatFire has a light footprint; about 6-8 MB only.
Using 2 AV's can cause serious conflicts and slow-downs, however, programs that are made to work alongside an AV (like for instance Avira AV and ThreatFire) won't cause any conflicts.

Downloaded files that you're not sure off, can be scanned with VirusTotal or Jotti's Malware Scan.
    Check my sig for links.
    Cheers.

    P.S It's 32-bit only!

I suppose that's something to consider since I upgraded to Avira 9 which supposed to have spyware protection. Still, I have SASPro with real time protection and haven't noticed any depreciation in system performance.
