#1 Antivirus - Intelligence. Don't be stupid, if you get a virus it's your fault. Following the basics, don't download suspicious files, don't open stupid emails, stop going to malware infested websites.

#2 Antivirus for me personally, Eset Nod32. I like to game, ESET NOd32 has smallest hit on my gaming performance of any Antivirus and it's got IMO the best heuristics atm. It's just a great product all around.

I use mcafee (real cheap on buy.com). Also Microsoft now offers free security essentials.

    Cheers,

I've been using AVG (free version) for years and so far it has worked out pretty well. Other equally good and free antivirus softwares include Avira and Avast.

I have used Kaspersky for several years and it has been great. However, their latest release (2010) seems to be a little more resource intensive than in previous versions.

I have used Avast and MSE and i can say that Avast is way better.. IMO , MSE is the worst free anti virus i've ever used... it can hardly detect viruses until i have downloaded file.. Avast stop the download immediately.... IMO use Avast.

I use and recommend Microsoft Security Essentials for a few reasons. It's detection engine is highly rated, it has the lowest false-positive rate of any major scanner, it's very resource light, and it's completely free - no registrations or annoying up-sell spam like Avira and AVG.

I've found it's real-time protection more than adequate for my needs. My only complaint would be that full-system scans are a little slow, but if you really need to get in there and thoroughly sweep your system with top-shelf detection, you should be using MalwareBytes anyways.

Microsoft Security Essentials is working out very well for me. Avast 5 is also an alternative that is very good.

im using avast pro but the free version is still very good.
dont forget that most of the free versions dont come with a firewall so you will have to turn on windows firewall as well.

Eset Smart Security + Comodo Firewall, the best combo after months of trial and error, Upto this day I can proudly say that its been 3 years and my Desktop has not met any slowdowns due to viruses and malware and still runs as fast as it started. I have never been plagued by a virus with this combo.

My recommendation goes to MSE. Though I haven't used it, I've heard all but good things about it! As for paid ones, I second, ESET Smart Security... I use it, and it is the lightest app I run... Seriously. When It's running scans, I hardly notice it!

I've used Microsoft Security Essentials from when it was in dev beta and I love it. Solid performance and detection with a small memory/cpu footprint. Doesn't hurt that its free too and updated regularly.

    Highly recommend it!!

Wait, I didn't mean it in a sense that I've never touched it, I meant I hadn't used it as a sole Anti-virus, I use it with my Virtual Machines. I made my choice of that from reviews. - Which is where my recommendation came from...

Mite not be free but if Gaming is ur thing ....

    #1 ESET Nod32 (version 4).

I have used Mcafee, Symantec Corporate, Norton, Kaspersky, Trend..but each has their own set of cons. ESET is extremely gaming friendly, does not tax ur system at all, and for the last 1 yr dat I have been using it, I have nothing but glowing reviews for this product. Hunts out viruses, stays non-intrusive, and plenty of advanced customization options. Just keep it regularly updated, and ur good to go!

I am sure you don't know what you are talking about there,
You see I know a lot about computers, and I have been using them for a while, even if many people give that argument it's stupid.
Let's see, I've been infected with Conficker, how does conficker work?
conficker permanently scans ip ranges from infected computers, it tries to send a special packet (UDP IIRC) that exploits a buffer overflow in windows xp and than it infects that machine (Basically)
are you saying that the UK navy is stupid because they were infected with conficker?
Conficker was/is? basically you are on the internet for a while, you just have to be online (and on a vurnerable machine at the time) and you risk being infected.
and second don't forget that virus definitions appear AFTER the virus is analyzed and reverse-engineered.

    Turn Real-Time protection for that.
ClavAV even though open-source is very bad as an antivirus (bad coding, can be crashed easily by malware, and it runs in user-mode I think)
