I've been using Symantec (think of it as Norton LITE) for about 7 years now with 0 issues.

I've used Bitdefender for years but recently switched to ESET.....trying out a 30 day free trial while I'm waiting for my new laptop to come in, their Internet Security package which includes their antivirus NOD32. I'll probably just end up with the antivirus software ESET NOD32 but so far I like the product. My current desktop has been having some glitches the last few days but I don't think it's the software, I think it started before I installed the ESET software....NOD32 came highly recommended to me but again, I have no long term experience with it.

I don't have an ETA for my laptop, woe is me......but I made a change from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 PRO today so I assume it's not built yet (UPDATE: just got an email that it's in the PRE PRODUCTION stage....yippee). Last change was more memory. I didn't really need either change but decided to go with the overkill. I swear this is the last change I'm making...LOL.

I will add Emsisoft Anti-Malware to the list , it has several strong components to keep your computer safe:

      • A dual-engine real time scanner.
      • A Behavior Blocker with anti-ransomware capabilities and a Windows Firewall fortification feature.
      • A surf protection to prevent access to malicious sites/domains.
      • A very reactive and professional customers support team react in hours, not days...)
      • An emphasize toward privacy. (no certificate interceptions, etc...)
Also the resource usage is quite good

ESET NOD32, been using it for more than 12 years....because......well, it has an HTTP Scanner that blocks bad connections/malicious downloads and sites. Because it has 0 false positives. Because it has Live Grid which is like a cloud for added protection (
ESET Live Grid is a preventative system that gathers information about threats from ESET users around the world. The Live Grid database contains reputation information about potential threats. When enabled, ESET Live Grid can detect and block the most recently introduced threats.
. Because it doesn't mess up Windows or Windows Updates or other software like other AVs do.......

ESET is quite reputed for its lightness.
Like Emsisoft AM, it stores its signatures in the RAM instead of the HDD so its fingerprint is low.

So having Windows defender on is much worse than pretty much any other A/V for being a resource hog?

I have a i7 6700hq and 16gb of Ram. I was curious if I would notice an improvement in media rendering from a simple A/V swap.

Out of curiosity, I tried ESET SysRescue and eventhough its using older engine scan times are fast. It took 40 mins to scan C drive and an hour to scan my bulk storage HDD. WD was 2x slower in scan speed than ESET.

You could try with CINEBENCH R15 equal as I tested in ESET NOD32/Internet Security thread. Test first without Anti virus then fire up your AV + a few Chrome webpages running in the background and then run Cinebench R15 once again. See if you can get about same results as first time without being hit too hard. Post before and after results with pict.

Windows Defender has an "annoyance" that was never fixed since Win8; create a folder with lot of executables/installers, opening the said folder will show a big slowdown in displaying the exes.

yes but it doesn't even offer the choice to scan on-execution or on-modification.

Yes my software folder which contains many folders with custom icons and even the EXEs all have white icons when I first access them if I had Windows Defender enabled. They load in slow motion despite my having an SSD and a fast CPU

Because WD scan all the time and submit to the cloud...ridiculous not to offer other scan options. It is why WD will always be subpar the others.

WD is baseline AV, if they improve and add features like 3rd party AVs then 3rd party AVs will lose most of their business and research work.
WD scans them based on recent-modification date.

Do you see Ferrari or Lamborghini making ads for their cars to sell? Heck now. People who want the fastest cars know where to find them.

Simple Google searches would reveal NOD32 is the lightest AV and most secure. Point is, enthusiasts now the best to use. I don't need to sit here and convince people to use ESET's products. Let them use what they wish and have the PC performance robbed with their fluffy advertisements.

That's not a good analogy. Is BMW a bad car company because I see their ads on TV all the time? A more apt comparison would be lawyers. This is something I have heard from multiple people - never trust an attorney who advertises on TV.

There are no ads but there are showrooms though. Even if you get a Ferrari 599 GTB or F12 Berlinetta there are more potholes and will require regular suspension changes and we're forced to use mid range cars. :p
I didn't get the meaning of this sentence "Point is, enthusiasts now the best to use"?
ESET is really good, my uncle's PC from UAE uses it and I thought it never existed in the PC.
Personally I still use WD. Just found a tweak to lighten up Win 10. Disabled System Restore/Protection to get better IO response time like Win 10 TH2. Its buggy and causes 100% disk usage on HDD. I suspect its due to enhanced data de-duplication, filesystem resiliency and reliability features added to counter Multi-point failure of disks.
