    Hi,

I am currently looking for the best internet security suite that runs well on a Samsung r20 laptop running vista. I need one that doesn't consume huge amounts of resources but provides great protection.

Can someone provide some suggestions please?

    Thanks

ESET Smart Security Suite (but I would probably download version 3, rather than version 4, until they get all the bugs out of version 4).

ESS 3 is light on resources and effective.

Norton Internet Security 2009 is a great security suite. It was completely rewritten form 2008, so that it consumes even less system resources than Eset Smart Security in my experience, and is very secure as well. It caught several pieces of viruses (that were basically killed by Eset already) on my old computer that Eset missed.

If you do decide to go the NIS 2009 route, Frys.com has it for $0.00 after rebate.

I am going to get a copy of NIS2009 from Frys because my one year license is up in June with ESET and unless they get the bugs worked out of ESS 4, I might just try NIS 2009 and figure that for $0.00, I'm not really risking anything.

    I'd say Norton's NIS2009, Kaspersky's KIS2009 or Avira's Security Suite.

On an XP box, I have NIS2009 running happily and on my Vista notebook I have Avira's Security Suite running at the moment.
Both run light, aren't much 'in your face', don't add much to your startup time and most important of all, they offer very good protection.
Mind you, Avira's suite is somewhat 'bare' in comparison to the other two mentioned.
Haven't tried KIS2009 myself but I've been reading good reviews and user experiences about it too.

The $0.00 price for NIS2009 that NBR member Built just reported is unbeatable.
If you can get it at that price, go for it. Immediately.
    Cheers.

I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security and am 100% happy with it :)
    I'd recommend it anytime.

PS: I can get it free too - via our bank :D - but I first bought a copy, the free licence fom our bank came later with Internet Banking.

I use Comodo's internet security suite and I'm quite content with it. The aforementioned security suites are also great picks ^_^

While I can't vouch for any other security suites, I've been using Norton Internet Security for years now.

Never had a virus/malware/spyware/OMG***BBQ ever since I bought it. Norton also stays out of my way, not intrusive at all.

I've used an NIS trial and was pleasantly surprised ay how discreet it was, very different to the product of yesteryear. If I was going to pay for one, I would go for this one.

I just purchased Norton 360 3.0 which NIS on steriods. I did use Trend Micro's PC-Cillian but when I upgrade to PCC 08 it crashed. When I went shopping for Norton 360 it was between versions so I downloaded the trial version of 3.0 as I ordered the full version.

At this point, I'd say, in order of my favorite to least favorite: 1) Norton Internet Security 2009, 2) Avira Premium Security Suite 9, 3) Eset Smart Security 4, 4) Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.

    1) NIS2009
The only version of Norton worth getting is the latest version of Internet Security 2009 (not counting the 360s which are slightly different). All previous versions of NIS are bloated and inefficient compared to the competition, despite the testimonials of the posters above. On the other hand, NIS2009 is light on resources, fast, and prevents and fixes security problems very well. However, you only get full functionality if you're using a 32-bit version of Windows Vista or lower. NIS2009 will not work on Windows 7, and some functionality will not work on 64-bit editions of any OS.

    2) Avira 9
Avira is well-rounded in most areas. It also doesn't feature complete 64-bit compatibility, and some features won't work. The free version of the antivirus gets more press usually, but the suite is quite quite good.

    3) ESS 4
Eset has never been known for great security suites (having only one prior version which was mediocre at best). However, its antivirus is one of the very best out there, on par with or better than Norton, Kaspersky, and Avira in certain areas. Still, ESS is the lightest security and fastest security suite, although Norton 2009 comes close now. Some of this speed comes at the expense of security, and v4 of ESS launched with a lot of program-breaking bugs. Most of these bugs are fixed now, although you'll have to subscribe to beta program updates. One perk is that if you buy the security suite, you can get the standalone antivirus without the rest of it if you want for no extra charge.

    4) Kaspersky 2009
A well-rounded suite. Not much to say about it. In some ways, the antivirus here is the polar opposite of nod32.

    5) Free
Avira Antivir Free Edition + Comodo Firewall + Malwarebytes + Superantispyware. Not a suite, but arguably the best standalone free security products available on the web today. No conflicts since only one program has real-time protection. Antivir uses same engine as the paid Avira AV, and Comodo Firewall is second to none as a standalone firewall. You could try Comodo's free antivirus or suite too as an alternative. MWB + SAS should be installed along with any of the suites above anyway. The real strength of this combo is that it is, of course, entirely free.

Out of curiosity, if someone is running their machines behind a hardware firewall (built into their router) - as I'm sure many of us here are - and use Windows' own firewall as well, is there a need for yet another software firewall?

Most software firewalls will disable and replace the Windows Firewall.

It's not recommend to have more than one firewall as they tend to overlap and sometimes interfere with each other and sometimes even with the internet connection itself. Normally if I plan on using another fireawll, I disable the Windows one and I usually encrypt my network rather than use the router's embedded software.

I am using Rudra Internet suite from Singapore. It works so well and it never needs any update or license fees renewal and all.

    How does that work?

Genrally new viruses require an update of the anti virus librar...

Was it made for Windows 7? It it wasn't, you shouldn't be surprised if it's crashing. ;)

See if they have a beta you can try, a lot of companies have a W7 beta you can try.
