In December my aunt got a PoS acer PC w/AMD 3800 single core and it is only reading 3/4ths of a GB of RAM and it came with norton, but she still hasn't even done the set-up. She and the rest of my family won't keep up the computer and Avira has a 6mo trial period, but I may not visit to May of next year so which should I use? I need the one that will be activated the longest.

    Avast or AVG?

I second Avast!; it comes with a 1-Year license once you register.

I am an Avast free user too, and it is a great AV with a 1 year license when you register it, as previous posters have mentioned.

Can somebody tell me why AVG has not been mentioned. More stable then Avast, better GUI, few more features, bit less of a memory hog, same par on definitions. Try both and get back to us on which is better. AVG or Avast.

PS. Do NOT try both at the same time :)

I use AVG and am happy. Free so I guess license is forever?

Kaspersky's got some cheap licenses available on EBay. Like less that 10 bucks/license for a year. Apart from that KIS is pretty good as well.

KIS is available in India for ~10USD ( 3 user, 1 year updates )
This is probably the cheapest deal possible for a top tier AV program

McAfee, the fastest?? Unless they've changed recently, it was always by far the slowest AV program I ever used.

I've used AVG for years now, and I'll tell you, the last couple of years, it has become more resource hungry and it's slipped in the rankings as far as effectiveness. I decided to finally uninstall it and at least give Avast a Chance.
