Hi, could anyone give me an idea of what a good anti virus would be, i dont mind paying as long as its not over £70, the thing that it must do is live scan websites on google search before i click on the link and also not have anti spyware as i use another anti spyware product that i hAVE paid for and has been really good, i also have a firewall so would like just an anti virus.

    thanks

    BitDefender 2009 or NOD32.
Kaspersky, Computer Associates, and Panda USED to be good... not so much anymore.
Norton and McAfee have sucked for ages.

I personally use NOD32 but re-sell BitDefender, as it's pretty user friendly.

I highly recommend Kaspersky 2009. It has a good virus detection rate

thanks everyone, i have downloaded every trial of all the big names and the only one from what i can see that displays a tick or a cross depending on the google results and if they are safe are avg and mcafee, i might have a look into mcafee unless anyone can tell me im wrong.

    thanks

If you're going for paid programs, NOD32 or Kasp. There is no reason to get McAfee. It's active protection isn't as good as its competitors, it's on-demand scan isn't as good its competitors, and it costs money. Sure, it's not a horrible anti-virus, but when there are better paid AND free options, why spend the money on it?

What, in your opinion, has diminished Kaspersky? I ask because according to many websites and independent testers, it still ranks among the highest out there.

Kaspersky has always been a tad more resource intensive than other "good" AVs (I do not consider Symantec or McAfee to be good) but it's protection was up to par so it was worth it. Now I'm starting to see issues with Kaspersky 2009 on computers that come into the shop - like Norton and McAfee, THE ANTI VIRUS ITSELF is what is causing half the problems. Norton and McAfee are overly intrusive and slow down the system way too much. Kaspersky is moving in the same direction.

In my opinion, the best antivirus is the one that fits your needs nicely and gets the work done without hiccuping, I'd recommend you to read reviews and try each antivirus you'd like to try before sticking to one, because some the reviewer might not like some features and not show them as they are, or etc...

Personally, I think that Avast! is the best antivirus, along with Nod 32 and Avira.

I hear you. I've been running Kaspersky for quite some time now and haven't noticed anything weird or funny or lacking. Then again, however, I'm not running the 2009 version. I'll keep an eye out for more news about this. Thanks for the info.

Man, there are about 101 threads concerning the "BEST" anti-virus.

    Get NOD IS or Avira.

If you're going to pay, might as a well get the full internet security suite, and the best I have seen in my testing is NOD IS. Unbelievably unobtrusive, does it's job, doesn't ask for anything in return, and has pretty good detection ratings.

If you want something for free, get Avira. It's simply better than all the other freeware programs out there.

    Done.

OH, and Mcafee is THE biggest POS I have ever seen. Literally. Got my lil' bro this sweet 13.3 Toshiba laptop that came preloaded with that POS and man was it slow. First thing I did was uninstall that POS and let's just say the laptop flew.

I have Mcafee a notch below having no anti-virus protection at all.

Hell, a virus won't cause your laptop to be as slow as that POS. Seriously.

    Man, I hate Mcafee.

Totally agree, and McAfee is actually better than any version of Norton past 2002 or so.
