I'm having problems with Avira free version. After installation it tries to update its virus definitions. And here is where the problem comes in. It tries to connect to the internet using MSN Explorer dial up. This is the original program I used to connect to the internet when I got the comp 9 years ago. At that time I used a dial up connection. Now I use IE8 and connect using a wireless card (not built in, it is in a card slot). I am not sure why it won't use IE8 and my normal internet connection. To make matters more interesting, when I click on the FAQ link it takes me to the Avira site using IE8 and my wireless....why does one portion of the program recognize and use the correct connection while the other tries to connect using a service that I no longer use and cancelled years ago.

I googled the problem to see if others had similar issues. People reported issued with regards to the update function not connecting to the internet or inability to download updates. So, I guess I could be experiencing the same problem and it is manifesting itself by trying to use a different internet connection?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As background - I have been using AVG free for a while but the new version takes it's toll on my old computer. I read that Avira was light on resources so that was my impetus to switch. I was also hoping to try out Avira for my new laptop which is in route. I did not buy antivirus figuring I would use one of the free ones in combination with some anti-malware and a windows firewall. In anticipation of this I wanted to test Avira.

I am running Windows XP with service pack 3.

    Hope this made sense. Thanks.

Go into Avira's configuration menu in Expert mode. Go to Update, then Web Server. Make sure your dialup connection is not set as the default connection for updates. I have mine set to "Use existing connection (network)". Make sure dialup is grayed out. Check this and let us know if you still have this problem.

yuyi64, thanks for the help. That did not work, it still wanted to connect using dial up. Eventually, I removed and reinstalled Avira twice to see if that worked, which it did not. B/c I did not want to be without protection I ended up removing Avira and reinstalled AVG. My new comp is in transit to me as we speak (left china a day ago :D ), so I will probably give Avira another chance and see if it plays nicer with the new computer and Vista. I don't like the resource hog of AVG, but I can put up with it for a week or so until I get the new comp.

    EDIT: http://techblog.avira.com/en/
"The update servers for our free Avira AntiVir Personal are currently under heavy load due to a huge update that gets delivered. Even if we are delivering with 8 GBit per second – whereof up to 1 GBit per second is used by IPv6 traffic alone! – this results in a slow update process for many of the free AntiVir Personal users. The situation should get better over the weekend, it already got better this night for a few hours.

We already increased bandwidth and made further optimizations to our servers. Also we’re working on a permanent solution to better serve the users of our free Avira AntiVir version – this may take a few weeks though.

Users of our Avira AntiVir Premium and Avira AntiVir Professional products are not affected by this issue."
